Potato virus Y (PVY) is among the most economically impactful potato pathogens, yet the spread of PVY from infected seed potatoes within commercial potato fields has not been adequately studied. Test lots containing various seed-borne PVY levels were created by mixing different proportions of seed pieces from healthy and infected tubers drawn from the same seed source. These seed lots were planted in commercial potato fields near the Teton Seed Potato Management Area from 2010 to 2012.

Through an analysis applied to the State of Georgia, land application of litter as a disposal alternative is examined along with its associated benefits. The analysis indicates that litter could be transported economically up to 256 km for cropland application.

Blending infected and healthy seed from different seed lots introduces the variable of performance differences between the seed lots, which may obscure the effect of virus alone. Seed lots containing various levels of seedborne PVY (0, 2, 10, 20, and 50% incidence of infected tubers) were created by combining in different proportions seed pieces from healthy and infected tubers from the same seed source.
