Background: Zinc supplementation is frequently prescribed during the treatment of COVID-19. However, the evidence supporting the efficacy of this intervention is mixed.

Objective: Establish the clinical utility of zinc supplementation to alter disease severity in COVID- 19 illness.

Understating how antibiotic tolerance impacts subsequent resistance development in the clinical setting is important to identifying effective therapeutic interventions and prevention measures. This study describes a patient case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteremia which rapidly developed resistance to three primary MRSA therapies and identifies genetic and metabolic changes selected in vivo that are associated with rapid resistance evolution. Index blood cultures displayed susceptibility to all (non-beta-lactam) antibiotics with the exception of trimethoprim/ sulfamethoxazole.

Background: Glioblastoma-associated macrophages and microglia (GAMs) are the predominant immune cells in the tumor microenvironment. Activation of MerTK, a receptor tyrosine kinase, polarizes GAMs to an immunosuppressive phenotype, promoting tumor growth. Here, the role of MerTK inhibition in the glioblastoma microenvironment is investigated in vitro and in vivo.

We present a case of endocarditis wherein organisms cultured from different valve leaflets yielded different daptomycin susceptibilities from each other and from organisms obtained from peripheral blood culture. Genomic analyses showed mutations in , and Pharmacokinetic simulations showed consistent activity of daptomycin plus beta-lactam against all subpopulations. This represents an opportunity to understand evolution and fitness on daptomycin therapy and the role of beta-lactams to prevent the selection of daptomycin-resistant subpopulations.

This work reports on the nanoscale assembly of hybrid lanthanum oxide and silica structures, which form patterns of interfacial dense and porous networks. It was found that increasing the molar ratio of lanthanum nitrate to tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) in an acid catalysed sol-gel process alters the expected microporous metal oxide silica structure to a predominantly mesoporous structure above a critical lanthanum concentration. This change manifests itself by the formation of a lanthanum silicate phase, which results from the reaction of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles with the silica matrix.

This work reports the remarkable effect of reversible gas molecular sieving for high temperature gas separation from cobalt doped ethoxy polysiloxane (CoES40) membranes. This effect stemmed from alternating the reducing and oxidising (redox) state of the cobalt particles embedded in the ES40 matrix. The reduced membranes gave the best H2 permeances of 1 × 10(-6) mol m(-2) s(-1) Pa(-1) and H2/N2 permselectivities of 65.

The World Health Organization recently updated its classification of central nervous system tumors, adding 8 entities, as well as defining new variants and morphologic patterns of existing entities. Despite the continued refinement of brain tumor histologic classification and grading, there remain some diagnostic "gray zones" that challenge general surgical pathologists and neuropathologists alike. These include the presence of oligodendroglial features in (mixed) oligoastrocytomas and glioblastomas (GBMs), GBM variants (such as small cell GBM), meningioma classification and grading, medulloblastoma variants, ependymoma grading, the presence of "neuronal features" in otherwise morphologically classic gliomas, and low-grade gliomas with high Ki-67 labeling indices.
