The evolutionary histories of adaptive radiations can be marked by dramatic demographic fluctuations. However, the demographic histories of ecologically-linked co-diversifying lineages remain understudied. The Laurentian Great Lakes provide a unique system of two such radiations that are dispersed across depth gradients with a predator-prey relationship.

Millions of tons of acetyl derivatives such as acetic acid and acetic anhydride are produced each year. These building blocks of chemical industry are elaborated into esters, amides, and eventually polymer materials, pharmaceuticals, and other consumer products. Most acetyls are produced industrially using homogeneous precious metal catalysts, principally rhodium and iridium complexes.

Kinship-based methods of population assessment such as close-kin mark-recapture require accurate and efficient genotyping methods capable of resolving complex relationships among kin. Inference of such relationships can be difficult using biallelic loci due to the large number of markers required to obtain the necessary power. Sequencing-based microsatellite panels offer an efficient alternative, combining high polymorphism with efficient next-generation methods.

Article Synopsis
  • This study assessed trends in pediatric critical illness due to SARS-CoV-2 during the COVID-19 pandemic, focusing on differences between the Omicron wave in January 2022 and the original outbreak in March 2020.
  • It found that while PICU admissions were seven times higher during the Omicron period, the need for endotracheal intubation was either reduced or unchanged, suggesting that younger patients may have been affected differently.
  • The study included 267 patients, highlighting the importance of ongoing research into the varying impacts of COVID-19 on children throughout different phases of the pandemic.

Severe acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) presents typically with an initializing event, followed by the need for mechanical ventilation. Most animal models of ALI are limited by the fact that they focus on a singular cause of acute lung injury (ALI) and therefore fail to mimic the complex, multifactorial pathobiology of ARDS. To better capture this scenario, we provide a comprehensive characterization of models of ALI combining two injuries: intra tracheal (i.

Sulfur mustard (SM) is a chemical warfare agent. When inhaled, SM causes significant injury to the respiratory tract. Although the mechanism involved in acute airway injury after SM inhalation has been well described previously, the mechanism of SM's contribution to distal lung vascular injury is not well understood.

Objective: Bile-acid diarrhoea (BAD) is a recognized cause of chronic diarrhoea; however, its detection remains suboptimal. Currently, there is a paucity of follow-up studies evaluating BAD. This work evaluates the natural history of BAD by examining individuals diagnosed with BAD [7 days of Se-homocholic acid taurine (SeHCAT) retention<10%] and determining the use of and response to bile-acid sequestrants (BAS).
