View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe Academy of Orthopaedic Physical Therapy (AOPT) has an ongoing effort to create evidence-based clinical practice guidelines (CPG) for orthopaedic physical therapy management of patients with musculoskeletal impairments described in the World Health Organization's International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF). The 2024 Achilles Pain, Stiffness, and Muscle Power Deficit: Midportion Achilles Tendinopathy Clinical Practice Guideline (CPG) is a revision of the 2018 CPG and represents the third CPG from AOPT on this topic. The goals of the revision were to provide a concise summary of the contemporary evidence and to develop new recommendations or revise previously published recommendations to support evidence-based practice.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFThe application of the Thiem equation to support the interpretation of comprehensive long-term monitoring datasets, made possible through modern datalogging technology, is presented as an alternative to constant-rate aquifer testing to obtain representative transmissivity estimates in settings where controlled hydraulic testing may be impractical. Water levels logged at regular intervals can be readily converted to average water levels over time periods corresponding to periods of known pumping rates. By regressing average water levels during multiple time periods of known but variable withdrawal rates, steady-state conditions can be approximated and Thiem's solution applied to estimate transmissivity, without performance of a constant-rate aquifer test.

We developed the to support interprofessional health care providers in their efforts to screen for feet/footwear-related influences on fall risk among community-dwelling older adults identified at risk for falling.
Materials And Methods: The study consisted of two phases.
Background: Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) have been used to provide insight into the patient experience while uncovering an opportunity to improve patient care. Current studies document responsiveness of outcomes using the Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information System (PROMIS) for a variety of orthopedic problems but are not specific to a physical therapy interval of care.
Purpose: The main purpose of this study was to examine responsiveness of the PROMIS Physical Function (PF) and Pain Interference (PI) scales across an interval of care for physical therapy in patients with foot and ankle conditions.
Background: Recognizing sport-related concussion (SRC) is challenging and relies heavily on subjective symptom reports. An objective, biological marker could improve recognition and understanding of SRC. There is emerging evidence that salivary micro-ribonucleic acids (miRNAs) may serve as biomarkers of concussion; however, it remains unclear whether concussion-related miRNAs are impacted by exercise.

Methods: A retrospective review was performed on patients who underwent bladder augmentation at a tertiary pediatric hospital between 1986 and 2014.
Background: Despite sufficient evidence to suggest that lower-limb-related factors may contribute to fall risk in older adults, lower-limb and footwear influences on fall risk have not been systematically summarized for readers and clinicians. The purpose of this study was to systematically review and synethesize the literature related to lower-limb, foot, and footwear factors that may increase the risk of falling among community-dwelling older adults.
Methods: We searched PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and AgeLine.
Changes in the function and microbiome of the upper and lower gastrointestinal tract have been documented in Parkinson's disease (PD), although most studies have examined merely fecal microbiome profiles and patients with advanced disease states. In the present study we sought to identify sensitive and specific biomarkers of changes in the oral microbiome of early stage PD through shotgun metatranscriptomic profiling. Objective: To determine if group differences exist when using objective measures of balance in a sample of collegiate athletes with recent SRCs and participants serving as the control group and to calculate sensitivity and specificity to determine the diagnostic utility of the inertial balance sensor for acute SRC injuries.
Study Design: Controlled laboratory, repeated measures.

Introduction/purpose: To examine the concurrent validity, and sensitivity, of an inertial sensor for use in the assessment of postural sway.
Methods: This was a laboratory-based, repeated-measures design with ten healthy participants. Concurrent validity was tested between an inertial sensor, forceplate, and rigid-body kinematics across three commonly used balance tests.
Background: The value of strengthening and stretching exercises combined with orthosis treatment in a home-based program has not been evaluated. The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of augmenting orthosis treatment with either stretching or a combination of stretching and strengthening in participants with stage II tibialis posterior tendon dysfunction (TPTD).
Methods: Participants included 39 patients with stage II TPTD who were recruited from a medical center and then randomly assigned to a strengthening or stretching treatment group.
