Wound complications after open reduction and internal fixation of tibial plateau fractures in the elderly: a multicentre study.

Purpose: The incidence of wound complications after open reduction with internal fixation (ORIF) of tibial plateau fractures in young patients has been reported to range from approximately 5 to 15%. Reports on wound complication rates in the elderly patients are limited. This study investigates the incidence of post-operative wound complications in elderly patients undergoing ORIF of their tibial plateau fractures.

Segond Fractures Are Not a Risk Factor for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction Failure.

Background: Segond fractures may be identified when an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tear is diagnosed and likely represent an avulsion of the anterolateral ligament. It is currently unclear whether these fractures can be ignored at the time of ACL reconstruction or if they should be addressed surgically.

Purpose: To compare the incidence of Segond fractures in patients undergoing primary ACL reconstruction compared with those undergoing revision ACL reconstruction in an attempt to determine if the presence of a Segond fracture predisposes to ACL reconstruction failure.

With continued emphasis on the value of healthcare, factors such as quality of life and patient reported outcomes are critical in evaluating high-demand procedures such as knee replacement surgery. Equally important to the surgery itself is maximizing the effectiveness and efficiency of the treatment, both preoperatively and postoperatively, which can have a significant effect the final outcome. Technical outcomes of total knee replacement are generally considered excellent; however, many patients continue to have postoperative pain, functional limitations, and low treatment satisfaction.
