Limited data are available on temocillin susceptibilities in Enterobacteriaceae from Asian countries where antimicrobial resistance is prevalent. The in vitro activities of temocillin and 15 commonly used antimicrobials against 613 non-duplicate blood (n = 310) and urine (with clinically significant bacteriuria; n = 303) isolates of Enterobacteriaceae from patients who attended 3 out of 7 clusters of public hospitals of the Hospital Authority, Hong Kong, during 2015/2016 were tested. Candida bloodstream infections (CBI) are one of the most common nosocomial infections globally, and they account for a high mortality rate. The increasing global prevalence of drug-resistant Candida strains has also been posing a challenge to clinicians. In this study, we comprehensively evaluated the biofilm formation and production of hemolysin and proteinase of 63 CBI isolates derived from a hospital setting in Hong Kong as well as their antifungal susceptibility both in the presence and in the absence of human serum, using standard methodology.

Objectives: To develop a rapid method for routine screening of methicillin-resistant staphylococci and VRE for clinical isolates and positive blood cultures.

Methods: Our method consisted of two parts: MALDI-TOF MS was used for identification of staphylococci and enterococci, followed by antibiotic resistance detection by real-time PCR-melt curve analysis without DNA extraction. The latter part included a triplex reaction for staphylococcal culture isolates (mecA, mecALGA251 and Panton-Valentine leucocidin genes), dual PCR of mecA/mecALGA251 and nuc genes for staphylococcal blood cultures, and a duplex reaction for enterococci (vanA and vanB genes).

Although the majority of COPD patients are first diagnosed and treated in primary care practices, there is comparatively little information on the management of COPD patients in primary care. A web-based pilot survey was conducted to evaluate the primary care physician's, or general practitioner's (GP's), knowledge, understanding, and management of COPD in twelve territories across the Asia-Pacific region, Africa, eastern Europe, and Latin America, using a 10-minute questionnaire comprising 20 questions and translated into the native language of each participating territory.

Background And Objective: This study assessed the asthma control test (ACT) cut-off values for asthma control according to the Global Initiative for Asthma guideline in adults and the effectiveness of ACT scores in predicting exacerbations and serial changes in ACT scores over time in relation to treatment decisions.

Methods: Subjects completed ACT together with same-day spirometry and fractional concentration of exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) measurement at baseline and at 3 months. Physicians, blinded to the ACT scores and FeNO values, assessed the patient's asthma control in the past month and adjusted the asthma medications according to management guidelines.

The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) Phase One showed large worldwide variations in the prevalence of symptoms of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema, up to 10 to 20 fold between countries. Ecological analyses were undertaken with ISAAC Phase One data to explore factors that may have contributed to these variations, and are summarised and reviewed here.In ISAAC Phase One the prevalence of symptoms in the past 12 months of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema were estimated from studies in 463,801 children aged 13 - 14 years in 155 centres in 56 countries, and in 257,800 children aged 6-7 years in 91 centres in 38 countries.
