The use of imaging systems in protein crystallisation means that the experimental setups no longer require manual inspection to determine the outcome of the trials. However, it leads to the problem of how best to find images which contain useful information about the crystallisation experiments. The adoption of a deeplearning approach in 2018 enabled a four-class machine classification system of the images to exceed human accuracy for the first time.

The Machine Recognition of Crystallization Outcomes (MARCO) initiative has assembled roughly half a million annotated images of macromolecular crystallization experiments from various sources and setups. Here, state-of-the-art machine learning algorithms are trained and tested on different parts of this data set. We find that more than 94% of the test images can be correctly labeled, irrespective of their experimental origin.
