Objective: Cognitive-behavioral therapy for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID; CBT-AR) shows promise in improving clinical outcomes in children/adolescents and adults. We aimed to identify predictors of outcomes in CBT-AR. We hypothesized that younger age, non-underweight status, and presence of the fear of aversive consequences profile of ARFID would predict greater likelihood of remission post-treatment, and that presence of the lack of interest in eating/food and sensory sensitivity profiles would predict greater likelihood of persistence post-treatment.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical AN (AtypAN) are complex neurobiological illnesses that typically onset in adolescence with an often treatment-refractory and chronic illness trajectory. Aberrant eating behaviors in this population have been linked to abnormalities in food reward and cognitive control, but prior studies have not examined respective contributions of clinical characteristics and metabolic state. Research is needed to identify specific disruptions and inform novel intervention targets to improve outcomes.

Purpose: Earlier work on engaging in physical exercise when experiencing negative affect demonstrated robust associations with eating disorder (ED) behaviors and attitudes; however, measurement of the behavior was primitive, relying on one yes/no question that cannot capture much variability. We report on the development of a self-report measure, the Reactive Exercise Scale (RES), that disentangles the tendency to engage in exercise in response to negative mood cues from the tendency to engage in exercise in response to eating and body image cues, which themselves may be associated with negative mood. The measure also assesses exercising in response to positive mood cues.

Rapid eating, a common feature of OBE, may be an observable indication of difficulty regulating eating. Objective: To improve our understanding of medical complications and endocrine alterations in patients with low-weight avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and how they may differ from those in anorexia nervosa (AN) and healthy controls (HC).

Method: We performed an exploratory cross-sectional study comparing low-weight females with ARFID (n = 20) with females with AN (n = 42) and HC (n = 49) with no history of an eating disorder.

Results: We found substantial overlap in medical comorbidities and endocrine features in ARFID and AN, but with earlier onset of aberrant eating behaviors in ARFID.

Objective: The majority of individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN) have a fat-phobic (FP-AN) presentation in which they explicitly endorse fear of weight gain, but a minority present as non-fat-phobic (NFP-AN). Diagnostic criteria for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) specifically exclude fear of weight gain.
