Background: There is variability in opioid prescription patterns among surgeons performing thyroidectomy. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate opioid prescription rates and opioid use among hemithyroidectomy (HT) and total thyroidectomy (TT) patients.
Design/method: An electronic postoperative survey was distributed to assess opiate use among patients undergoing HT/TT.

Introduction: Type one laryngeal cleft (T1LC) has been implicated as a major contributor to aspiration in non-syndromic pediatric dysphagia. Despite an increasing incidence, there remains controversy in diagnosis and treatment algorithms.
Objectives: The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the inter-rater reliability (IRR) for the diagnosis and treatment of T1LC.
Objectives/hypothesis: Investigate the relationship between site and pattern of distant metastasis (DM) and overall survival (OS) in a multi-institutional cohort of patients with DM head and neck cancer (HNC).
Study Design: Retrospective review.
Methods: 283 patients treated at 4 academic centers in the Midwest HNC Consortium between 2000 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewed.
Background: Endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is a variable combination of individual procedures. Cost estimates for ESS as a single entity have wide variation, likely influenced by variation in procedures performed. We sought to identify operative time, supply costs, and total procedure cost specific to the component procedure combinations comprising ESS.

Exploring potential methods of controlling postoperative rhinoplasty pain with non-narcotic medications. To examine the effects of celecoxib in reducing pain and possible opioid consumption after rhinoplasty surgery. This is a prospective cohort study of 51 consecutive patients who had undergone rhinoplasty surgery between July 2018 and May 2019 by a single facial plastic surgeon.

Understanding opioid prescribing and utilization patterns after sinonasal surgery is critical in designing effective practice protocols. In this study we aim to identify factors associated with variable opioid usage and further delineate optimal prescription patterns for sinonasal surgery.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFIatrogenic recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury is a morbid complication of anterior neck surgical procedures. Existing treatments are predominantly symptomatic, ranging from behavioral therapy to a variety of surgical approaches. Though laryngeal reinnervation strategies often provide muscle tone to the paralyzed vocal fold (VF), which may improve outcomes, there is no clinical intervention that reliably restores true physiologic VF movement.

A defined, well-projected chin and jawline are crucial to this harmony and recontouring the lower third of the face plays a significant role in plastic surgery. Chin augmentation can be performed with injectables, implantation, or osseous genioplasty.

The ideal scar is narrow, flat, level with surrounding tissue, and difficult for the untrained eye to see due to color match and placement parallel to relaxed skin tension lines; however, scarring that is dyspigmented, hypertrophied, widened, contracted, or atrophic can be aesthetically displeasing or causing functional limitations. When the scar has unfavorable characteristics, scar revision is often indicated and the cosmetic surgeon must be knowledgeable of the minimally invasive as well as surgical techniques to improve aesthetics, reduced reoccurrence, or correct functional limitations.

Background: Understanding the variation in costs of endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS) is critical to defining value. Current published costs of ESS have not identified potential sources of variation. Our objective was to analyze ESS costs to identify sources of variance that could guide value-improving decisions.

Nasoenteric tubes provide short-term nutrition support to patients unable to take an adequate oral diet. Bridling systems may be used to secure tubes to guard against displacement. We present the first case of an avulsed magnet from a bridling system to raise awareness of this potential complication.
