This research assessed the proportion of patients who develop AKI after aortic intervention using validated criteria, and explored AKI risk factors.
Methods: This was a multicentre national prospective cohort study.
Objectives: In periods of cerebral ischaemia, adenosine triphosphate is metabolised, leading to accumulation of adenosine inosine and hypoxanthine. These can be measured in real time using peripheral blood samples intraoperatively. The primary aim of this study was to describe changes in purine concentrations in a cohort of patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy under general anaesthetic, and to evaluate correlation between changes in values with major perioperative steps.

Methods: Vital signs, overnight cardiorespiratory sleep studies and transcranial Doppler were undertaken in nine children (aged 6-13 years) at low altitude (130 m), and then at moderate (1300 m) and high (3500 m) altitude during a 5-day ascent.
Background And Purpose: Cerebral microemboli signals (MES) are associated with increased risk of acute stroke syndromes. We compared the effects on cerebral microemboli after carotid endarterectomy of tirofiban with dextran-40.
Methods: We used transcranial Doppler ultrasound to study transient MES acutely after carotid endarterectomy between August 2000 and December 2010 in 128 subjects refractory to preoperative antiplatelet treatment.
Background: With recent emphasis placed on workplace based assessment (WBA) as a method of formative performance assessment, there is limited evidence in the current literature regarding the role of feedback in improving the effectiveness of WBA. The aim of this systematic review was to elucidate the impact of feedback on the effectiveness of WBA in postgraduate medical training.
Methods: Searches were conducted using the following bibliographic databases to identify original published studies related to WBA and the role of feedback: Medline (1950-December 2010), Embase (1980-December 2010) and Journals@Ovid (English language only, 1996-December 2010).
Syndromes thought to have cerebral venous hypertension as their core, such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension and jugular foramen outlet obstruction, classically result in headaches. Do they provide an insight into the cause of the headache that commonly occurs at altitude? The classic theory of the pathogenesis of high altitude headache has been that it results from increased intracranial pressure (ICP) secondary to hypoxemia in people who have less compliant intracranial volumes (Roach and Hackett, 2001). However, there does not appear to be a correlation between the headache of acute mountain sickness (AMS) and the presence of cerebral edema (Bailey et al, 2006; Wilson et al, 2009).
