The interfacial structure of natural rubber (NR) colloids is investigated by means of cryogenic transmission electron microscopy (cryo-TEM) and electrokinetics over a broad range of KNO3 electrolyte concentrations (4-300 mM) and pH values (1-8). The asymptotic plateau value reached by NR electrophoretic mobility (μ) in the thin double layer limit supports the presence of a soft (ion- and water-permeable) polyelectrolytic type of layer located at the periphery of the NR particles. This property is confirmed by the analysis of the electron density profile obtained from cryo-TEM that evidences a ∼2-4 nm thick corona surrounding the NR polyisoprene core.

We present a systematic study of flexible cylindrical brush-shaped macromolecules in a good solvent by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), static light scattering (SLS), and by dynamic light scattering (DLS) in dilute and semi-dilute solution. The SLS and SANS data extrapolated to infinite dilution lead to the shape of the polymer that can be modeled in terms of a worm-like chain with a contour length of 380 nm and a persistence length of 17.5 nm.

We report on the earliest stages of the formation of complexes of calcium phosphate in the presence of the serum protein alpha(2)-HS glycoprotein/fetuin-A termed calciprotein particles (CPPs). Time-resolved small-angle X-ray scattering (TR-SAXS) and stopped-flow analysis were used to monitor the growth of protein mineral particles nucleating from supersaturated salt solutions. It was found that fetuin-A did not influence the formation of mineral nuclei.
