Article Synopsis
  • Chronic ankle instability is common after lateral sprains, often with unrecognized issues in the ankle and subtalar joints; this study evaluates long-term outcomes of a specific surgical technique combining ligament retensioning and reinforcement with an extensor retinaculum flap.
  • In a retrospective review of 150 cases over 11 years, 30% had ligament lesions; patient satisfaction was high (93%), and only 4.8% experienced residual instability.
  • This study claims to have the largest follow-up for this technique, showing it effectively addresses both ankle and subtalar instability, prevents post-injury arthritis, and outperforms other methods in satisfaction and stability.

Peroneal tendon pathology is rare, but is probably underestimated because it is frequently undiagnosed. It should always be in the differential diagnosis of lateral ankle pain. Surgical treatment of peroneal tendinopathy is indicated after failure of conservative measures.

Soft tissue balance during total knee arthroplasty (TKA) procedures may be challenging to achieve in knees with severe valgus or varus deformities. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role of navigation in predicting soft tissue release during 90 computer-assisted TKA procedures performed within a 2-year period. Fourteen soft tissue releases were performed, 13 of which were for genu varum, including 9 deep medial collateral ligaments and 4 deep and superficial medial collateral ligaments, and 1 for genu valgum deformity.
