Article Synopsis
  • Neoadjuvant short-term radiotherapy (SRT-delay) may effectively downsize tumors in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer who cannot tolerate conventional chemoradiation.
  • Between March 2018 and July 2021, a study involving 26 patients showed significant reductions in tumor size and volume after SRT-delay, with a mean diameter decrease from 54.1 mm to 25.5 mm prior to surgery.
  • The procedure improved the likelihood of negative circumferential resection margins (CRM) and allowed for complete re-staging in most patients, indicating promising outcomes for surgical feasibility.

However, at present there is no irrigation fluid for peritoneal lavage with residual antiseptic activity.
