Purpose: Allogeneic stem cell transplantation may cure approximately 50% of patients, however, a significant part of the other half might benefit from a high-quality palliative care medicine at the end of life. Somatic, psychic and spiritual needs of these patients may differ from those of patients suffering from incurable solid tumours and are not comprehensively evaluated so far.

Methods: To address this question, data from charts of 123 patients who have died after allogeneic stem cell transplantation were extracted.

Background: Anthracyclines, as the most effective therapy, are the cornerstone of advanced stage sarcoma treatment. However, anthracyclines can also contribute to myocardial dysfunction and congestive heart failure, ultimately limiting the therapeutic potential of the drug. Coadministration of Dexrazoxane has been shown to effectively reduce cardiotoxicity, however primarily in patients suffering in diseases other than sarcoma.

Purpose: In patients undergoing allogeneic stem cell transplantation, conditioning regimens containing alemtuzumab instead of anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) may result in an earlier platelet engraftment and a reduced number of platelet transfusions.

Methods: We performed a retrospective, single-center, case-control study analyzing time to engraftment and transfusion needs using alemtuzumab in comparison with ATG as part of conditioning protocol.

Results: Median values for time to platelet engraftment, number of transfused platelet concentrates and number of transfused red cell concentrates were 12 versus 19.

Objective: Epithelioid sarcoma (ES) presents unique clinical features in comparison to other sarcoma subtypes. Data regarding the benefits of chemotherapy are very limited. Combination regimens using gemcitabine and docetaxel (Gem/Doce) have proven to be effective, especially in uterine and nonuterine leiomyosarcoma.

Introduction: Allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) has become available for elderly patients or for patients with comorbidities by introduction of reduced-intense conditioning. Comorbidity-related prognosis after alloSCT can be estimated by the hematopoietic cell transplantation comorbidity index (HCT-CI).

Material And Methods: The charts from 85 patients who have undergone 90 alloSCTs between 1999 and 2011 were analysed.

Objectives: To better understand the molecular pathogenesis of T-cell large granular lymphocyte leukemia (T-LGL), we decided to search for those genetic alterations in T-LGL patients and MOTN-1 cell line (established from T-LGL patient) that have an impact on gene expression and as a result can influence cell biology.

Methods: Multicolor fluorescence in situ hybridization (mFISH) analysis of the MOTN-1 cell line was performed as well as paired-end next-generation sequencing (NGS; Illumina HiSeq2000) of this cell line and one T-LGL patient. In addition, chosen 6q region was characterized in three T-LGL patients using high-resolution comparative genomic hybridization (FT-CGH) and LM-PCR.

Thrombocytopenia can cause diagnostic challenges in patients who have received heparin. Heparin-induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is often considered in the differential diagnosis, and a positive screening can be mistaken as confirmation of the disorder. We present two patients who both received low-molecular-weight heparin for several days.

Background: Patients with mucin-producing adenocarcinoma have an increased risk for venous and arterial thrombosis. When these patients present with thrombocytopenia, disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC) is often the underlying cause.

Case Report: We report 2 patients who were admitted due to bleeding symptoms of unknown cause, in whom further workup revealed adenocarcinoma-induced DIC.

Antibody-mediated in vivo T cell depletion is common prior to unrelated (URD) or mismatched allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) and optional in HLA-identical sibling (FAM) alloSCT. While anti-thymocyte globulin (ATG) is the current standard, alemtuzumab is an alternative. The optimal dose of alemtuzumab has not been defined.

Therapy of indolent lymphomas with involvement of the central nervous system (CNS) has not been standardized so far. A 42-year old male patient presented with neurological signs because of leukemic splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL) manifested in bone marrow, lymph nodes and CNS. Due to the aggressiveness of the disease and the young age of the patient, an intensive immunochemotherapy followed by high-dose therapy with busulfan, thiotepa and fludarabine and subsequent unrelated allogeneic stem cell transplantation (alloSCT) was performed.

Background: Alveolar soft-part sarcoma (ASPS) is a rare sarcoma often occurring in young patients that is characterized by the unbalanced translocation der(17)t(X;17) (p11;q25). Although it usually shows an indolent clinical course, the prognosis is usually poor in advanced disease. Since standard chemotherapy regimens used in soft-tissue sarcomas lack efficacy in ASPS, new therapeutic options are needed.

Background: Real-time quantitative PCR is increasingly used in clinical laboratories. Genomic DNA or plasmids containing cloned target sequences are necessary to generate data for standard curves. These data must be analysed to obtain the relative or absolute quantity of the target concentration in a sample.

The mitochondrial phospholipid cardiolipin (CL) is required for oxidative phosphorylation. Oxidation of CL results in the disruption of CL-cytochrome c binding and the induction of apoptosis. Large variations in the acyl-chain residues of CL have been reported, but evidence as to whether these variants exert distinct biological effects has been limited.

Toxoplasmosis is a rare but possibly underestimated complication following allogeneic stem cell transplantation with a high mortality rate. One reason might be the limitation of the diagnostic instruments relying mainly on imaging and molecular-based techniques. In this report, we present three cases of toxoplasmosis identified among 155 allograft recipients treated at Greifswald University Hospital.

Background: Therapyrelated mucositis is associated with considerable morbidity. This complication following allogeneic stem cell therapy (alloSCT) is less severe after reduced intense conditioning (RIC); however, even here it may be serious.

Methods: 52 patients (male: n = 35 (67%), female: n = 17 (33%)) at a median age of 62 years (35-73 years) underwent alloSCT after RIC.

We describe a 57-year-old woman suffering from acute erythroblastic leukaemia. After the first course of high-dose Ara-C containing consolidation therapy, the patient developed multiple skin lesions on the left foot. A skin biopsy revealed a Fusarium infection.

Background: Chromosomal deletion of q13 (del q13) and plasma cell leukemia predict both a worse prognosis in myeloma. Experiences with bortezomib in plasma cell leukemia prior to allogeneic stem cell transplantation (SCT) have not yet been reported.

Case Report: A 66- year-old male patient was admitted for IgA myeloma(IIIA) with del q13.
