Importance: Transthyretin tetramer destabilization is the rate-limiting step in the development of transthyretin cardiac amyloidosis, an underrecognized contributor to mortality in older adults.

Objective: To test the hypothesis that transthyretin tetramer destabilization is associated with all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the general population.

Design, Setting, And Participants: In this cohort study including individuals aged 20 to 80 years, genetic data were analyzed from 2 similar prospective studies of the Danish general population, the Copenhagen City Heart Study (CCHS) and the Copenhagen General Population Study (CGPS).

Article Synopsis
  • Streptococci are common bacterial causes of abortion in mares, often entering the uterus from the lower genital tract.
  • S. ovis, typically linked to sheep diseases, was found in an 8-month-old aborted equine fetus and connected to severe lung and placental infections.
  • The infection likely occurred after a veterinarian unintentionally damaged the cervical mucus plug during a swab procedure, allowing the bacteria to access the uterus.

Traumatic childhood events are some of the few identifiable and to some extent preventable causes of psychiatric illness. Children exposed to severely stressful events may react with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and this may impact their level of function in daily life, their future development and mental health. The traumatic stress model suggests that traumatic stress in the family, community violence, and other traumas are regarded as additive environmental factors that can outweigh protective compensatory factors and thus interact with individual vulnerabilities.

Background: Robot-assisted ventral hernia repair is associated with decreased length of stay and lower complication rates compared with open repair, but acquisition and maintenance of the robotic system is costly. The aim of this was study was to compare the procedure-specific cost of robot-assisted and open ventral and incisional hernia repair including cost of procedure-related readmissions and reoperations within 90 days postoperatively.

Methods: Single-center retrospective cohort study of 100 patients undergoing robot-assisted ventral hernia.

Women have the highest prevalence of epigastric hernia repair. Outcomes after epigastric hernia repair are rarely reported independently, although pathology and surgical techniques may be different than for other primary ventral hernias. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term outcomes after epigastric hernia repairs in women on a nationwide basis.

Background: Negative Pressure Therapy in closed incisions (ciNPT) after surgery has shown positive effects including reduction of Surgical Site Infection (SSI) incidence. In patients undergoing elective open incisional hernia repair, however, ciNPT is not standard care, perhaps due to high-quality evidence still not provided. This study hypothesizes that this patient group would benefit from ciNPT by reducing wound complications and improving postoperative quality of life.

Article Synopsis
  • Outcome data for patients with relapsed/refractory diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), especially beyond second-line therapy, is limited outside of clinical trials, making real-world context important.
  • A study in Denmark reviewed medical records of 3753 adults with DLBCL, focusing on 189 patients who received third-line treatment or beyond, with a median age of 71 years and various treatment options including supportive care and clinical trials.
  • Overall survival rates were low, with 2-year estimates at 25% for all patients and 49% for those receiving platinum-based salvage therapy, while certain factors like age, CNS involvement, and elevated LDH indicated poorer outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Equine pregnancy failure can happen at any point during gestation, with umbilical cord torsion (UCT) being a significant cause in Europe, responsible for up to 52% of abortions and stillbirths.
  • A study involving 72 cases focused on identifying maternal and fetal risk factors linked to UCT and umbilical cord length (UCL), finding that UCT was more prevalent in the mid-gestational period and associated with shorter gestational lengths.
  • The study revealed that fetuses aborted due to UCT had significantly longer umbilical cords and that the odds of experiencing UCT increased during mid-gestation, with specific correlations between UCL and the occurrence of abortion.

Equine endometrial degeneration is diagnosed by microscopy of an endometrial biopsy but it is uncertain if findings in a single biopsy represent the state of the entire endometrium. Previous studies have compared samples from multiple sites but conclusions are inconsistent. Further clarification is therefore needed.

Purpose: Enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols lead to reduced post-operative stay and improved outcomes after most types of abdominal surgery. Little is known about the optimal post-operative protocol after robotic ventral hernia repair (RVHR), including the potential limits of outpatient surgery. We report the results of an ERAS protocol after RVHR aiming to identify factors associated with overnight stay in hospital, as well as patient-reported pain levels in the immediate post-operative period.

Red calcareous algae create bio-aggregations ecosystems constituted by carbonate calcium, with two main morphotypes: geniculate and non-geniculate structures (rhodoliths may form bio-encrustations on hard substrata or unattached nodules). This study presents a bibliographic review of the order Corallinales (specifically, rhodoliths), highlighting on morphology, ecology, diversity, related organisms, major anthropogenic influences on climate change and current conservation initiatives. These habitats are often widespread geographically and bathymetrically, occurring in the photic zone from the intertidal area to depths of 270 m.

Article Synopsis
  • Genetic variants in the ABCA1 gene are linked to higher levels of HDL cholesterol, which has been observed to correlate with an increased risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
  • A study involving nearly 90,000 individuals found that specific genetic variants in ABCA1 were associated with a higher likelihood of developing all-cause, nonneovascular, and neovascular AMD.
  • The findings suggest that genetic variations in ABCA1 not only raise HDL cholesterol levels but may also contribute to the development of AMD, indicating a potential role for ABCA1 in the disease's progression.

Eosinophilic granulocytes are normally present in low numbers in the bloodstream. Patients with an increased number of eosinophilic granulocytes in the differential count (eosinophilia) are common and can pose a clinical challenge because conditions with eosinophilia occur in all medical specialties. The diagnostic approach must be guided by a thorough medical history, supported by specific tests to guide individualized treatment.
