Approximately 10% of patients experience persistent symptoms following COVID-19, known as long-COVID syndrome. This cross-sectional study explored factors of quality of life (QoL) in 53 long-COVID patients. QoL was measured using the World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index, fatigue with the Fatigue Visual Analogue Scale, and psychological health with the Depression-Anxiety-Stress-21 questionnaire.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAortic aneurysm, the pathological dilatation of the aorta at distinct locations, can be attributed to many different genetic and environmental factors. The resulting pathobiological disturbances generate a complex interplay of processes affecting cells and extracellular molecules of the tunica interna, media and externa. In short, aortic aneurysm can affect processes involving the extracellular matrix, lipid trafficking/atherosclerosis, vascular smooth muscle cells, inflammation, platelets and intraluminal thrombus formation, as well as various endothelial functions.

Effective models of cardiac disease are thus important for understanding crucial aspects of disease progression, while recent advancements in stem cell biology have allowed for the use of stem cell populations to derive such models. These include three-dimensional (3D) models such as stem cell-based models of embryos (SCME) as well as organoids, many of which are frequently derived from embryoid bodies (EB).

View Article and Find Full Text PDFAmyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a devastating, uniformly lethal degenerative disease of motor neurons, presenting with relentlessly progressive muscle atrophy and weakness. More than fifty genes carrying causative or disease-modifying variants have been identified since the 1990s, when the first ALS-associated variant in the gene SOD1 was discovered. The most commonly mutated ALS genes in the European populations include the C9orf72, SOD1, TARDBP and FUS.

The advent of endovascular techniques and the introduction of modern arch protheses have led to the implementation of the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique. This one-step hybrid operation consists of a total aortic arch replacement combined with an antegrade delivery of a stent-graft for the descending aorta, which acts as a proximal landing zone facilitating a potential distal endovascular reintervention.

Methods: The German nationwide inpatient sample was screened for patients admitted due to PE 2005-2020. Hospitalizations were stratified for the occurrence of ICH; risk factors for ICH and temporal trends were investigated.
SCA is a rare congenital anomaly that, under certain conditions, can pose a life-threatening risk to the individual. It is crucial to fully understand the entire course of the vessel and its anatomical relationships before developing a personalized treatment plan.

A total of six major saponins, including gypsogenin and gypsogenic acid derivatives, as well as saponariosides C, D, and E, were identified using UHPLC/Q-TOF-MS analysis, with gypsogenin derivatives being the most common saponins detected through quantitative analysis. A total of six phenolic compounds were also identified, including rutin, quercetin galactoside, syringic acid, apigenin, protocatechuic, and vanillic acid.

Methods And Results: We calculated the direct cost of illness during the first year after discharge for the index PE, analyzing data from a multicentre prospective cohort study in Germany.
Background And Aims: Studies have suggested that statins may be associated with reduced risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). The aim of the current study was to assess the evidence regarding the comparative effect of all lipid-lowering therapies (LLT) in primary VTE prevention.
Methods: After a systematic search of PubMed, CENTRAL, and Web of Science up until 2 November 2022, randomized controlled trials (RCT) of statins (high- or low-/moderate-intensity), ezetimibe, or proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 inhibitors (PCSK9i) were selected.
Background And Objectives: The intronic biallelic AAGGG expansion in the replication factor C subunit 1 () gene was recently associated with a phenotype combining cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, and vestibular areflexia syndrome, as well as with late-onset ataxia. Following this discovery, studies in multiple populations extended the phenotypic and genotypic spectrum of this locus. Multiple benign and additional pathogenic configurations are currently known.

Case Presentation: We present two siblings diagnosed with BNS at midlife, identified with homozygous state of a novel PNPLA6 missense mutation. One healthy sibling and the mother were heterozygous carriers of the mutation.
Sodium-glucose cotransporters 2 (SGLT2) are high-capacity, low-affinity transporters, expressed mainly in the early portion of the proximal renal tube, mediating up to 90% of renal glucose uptake, while SGLT1 receptors are found mainly in the small intestine, facilitating glucose absorption. SGLT2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) originally emerged as agents for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus; however, they soon demonstrated remarkable cardio- and renoprotective actions that led to their licensed use for the treatment of heart failure and chronic kidney disease, regardless of the diabetic status. Cardiovascular remodelling represents an umbrella term that encompasses changes that occur in the cardiovascular system, from the molecular and cellular level, to tissue and organs after local injury, chronic stress, or pressure.

Typically managed with guideline-directed medical therapy, interventional or surgical methods, the incurred cardiomyocyte loss is not always completely reversible; however, recent research into various stem cell (SC) populations has highlighted their potential for the treatment and perhaps regeneration of injured cardiac tissue, either directly through cellular replacement or indirectly through local paracrine effects. Different stem cell (SC) types have been employed in studies of infarcted myocardium, both in animal models of myocardial infarction (MI) as well as in clinical studies of MI patients, including embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), Muse cells, multipotent stem cells such as bone marrow-derived cells, mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and cardiac stem and progenitor cells (CSC/CPCs).

Aims: Catheter-directed treatment (CDT) of acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is entering a growth phase in Europe following a steady increase in the USA in the past decade, but the potential economic impact on European healthcare systems remains unknown.
Methods And Results: We built two statistical models for the monthly trend of proportion of CDT among patients with severe (intermediate- or high-risk) PE in the USA. The conservative model was based on admission data from the National Inpatient Sample (NIS) 2016-20 and the model reflecting increasing access to advanced treatment from the PERT™ national quality assurance database registry 2018-21.
With an estimated incidence of one in 10,000 to one in 50,000 patients, Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare innate anomaly, portraying a mirror image of the normal anatomy, as the cardiac position and abdominal viscera are completely inverted. Despite the fact that physicians and researchers have been dealing with the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic for three years, there is a lack of published data examining the potential effects of anatomic variations on coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. This study aimed to contribute to this domain by presenting a rare case of a COVID-19 infection coexisting with SIT as one of the very few cases reporting the simultaneous presence of the two pathologies.
