Purpose: To assess the effects of external beam radiotherapy (EBRT) on adenoviral-mediated transgene expression in vitro and in vivo and to define an optimal strategy for combining sodium iodide symporter (NIS)-mediated (131)I therapy with EBRT.
Experimental Design: Expression of reporter genes [NIS, green fluorescent protein (GFP), beta-galactosidase (lacZ), and luciferase (Luc)] from replication-deficient adenoviruses was assessed in tumor cell lines under basal conditions and following irradiation. The effects of viral multiplicity of infection (MOI) and EBRT dose on the magnitude and duration of gene expression were determined.
Background: Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) commonly is estimated in kidney transplantation by using creatinine-based estimation equations. The performance of these equations in kidney transplant recipients is unclear, with conflicting results between studies.
Study Design: Systematic review.
Purpose: To test combination treatment schedules of reovirus and radiation in human and murine tumor cells in vitro and in vivo.
Experimental Design: In vitro cytotoxicity and cell cycle effects of reovirus given alone and combined with radiotherapy were assessed by colorimetric, tissue culture infectious dose 50, and fluorescence-activated cell sorting-based assays. Interactions between the agents were evaluated using combination index analysis.
Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to investigate whether it is possible to achieve truly systemic delivery of oncolytic reovirus, in immunocompetent hosts, using cyclophosphamide to overcome some of the barriers to effective intratumoral delivery and replication of i.v. injected virus.

Leukemia inhibitory factor (LIF) is essential for mouse blastocyst implantation and also plays a role in human pregnancy. We examined the effect of a potent LIF antagonist (LA) on mouse implantation.

The utility of BTP has been limited by the lack of an equation to translate BTP into an estimate of GFR. The objectives of this study were to develop a BTP-based GFR estimation equation.

However, creatinine-based equations are inaccurate in RTRs leading to frequent CKD stage misclassification. It is not known whether the classification of CKD stage would be improved using a cystatin C-based estimate of GFR.

Here we studied the stimulus-dependent induction of both genes in vivo. dsRNA, which is generated during virus infection, induced the expression of both genes in all organs examined.

This paper examines the synergism among diet, disease, and ecology at two related coastal Maya sites in Belize (Marco Gonzalez and San Pedro) for the Postclassic and Historic periods (1350-1650 AD), which immediately follow the Classic period collapse. Stable carbon- and nitrogen-isotope ratios in collagen and stable carbon-isotope ratios in structural carbonate were analysed for bones from 65 humans and a wide variety of faunal species. There are no apparent differences in whole diets or degree of carnivory between individuals with lesions indicative of anemia and those without, but those with lesions appear to have consumed significantly more C4 foods and protein from lower trophic levels.

Initial phenotypic studies in a mouse containing mutations in both toll-like receptor 3 (TLR3) and RNA-de-pendent protein kinase R (PKR) revealed comparable spleen and bone marrow cell populations in tlr3(-/)-, pkr(-/-), and tlr3(-/-)pkr(-/-) mice to wild-type controls. Splenomegaly developing between 8 and 10 weeks of age was observed in tlr3(-/-) and tlr3(-/-)pkr(-/-) mice but not in wild-type or pkr(-/-) mice. Palpably enlarged cervical, axillary, and inguinal lymph nodes accompanied by enlarged spleens were observed in 12-18-week-old tlr3(-/-) mice at a higher frequency compared with other genotypes.

Decidualization of human ESC in vitro is enhanced by interleukin 11 (IL11), with associated changes in gene expression. Genes downstream of IL11 may provide targets for the treatment of implantation failure or the development of non-hormonal contraceptives.

Chemokines, critical regulators of leukocyte migration, are abundant in endometrial epithelial and decidual cells at this time. We hypothesized that endometrial chemokines stimulate trophoblast invasion.

Treatment with the Food and Drug Administration-approved regimen also requires that scans be performed at 2-24 h and at 48-72 h after the (111)In-ibritumomab tiuxetan, with an optional third scan at 90-120 h, to confirm appropriate biodistribution. In the clinical trials before the approval of the regimen, only 1 patient (of approximately 400) was not treated with (90)Y-ibritumomab tiuxetan after imaging with (111)In-ibritumomab tiuxetan, because of altered biodistribution.

Although not accurate in renal transplantation, GFR is often estimated using creatinine-based equations. Cystatin C is a marker of GFR that seems to be more accurate than creatinine.

Here we describe the physical and antigenic properties of the L1R membrane protein. The recombinant protein (L1R(185t)) was secreted as a monomer and correct folding was suggested by the presence of three intramolecular disulfide bonds and binding to conformation-specific monoclonal antibodies (MAbs).

Bone collagen and bioapatite were analyzed from 67 individuals (n < or = 6 years = 15, n > 6 years = 52). Five isotopic measures were used to reconstruct diet and weaning: stable nitrogen- and carbon-isotope ratios in collagen, stable carbon- and oxygen-isotope ratios in bioapatite, and the difference in stable carbon-isotope values of coexisting collagen and bioapatite.

Conducting a microarray study is a multi-step process; starting with a well-defined biological question, moving through experimental design, target RNA preparation, microarray hybridisation, image acquisition and data analysis--finishing with a biological interpretation requiring further study. Advances continue to be made in microarray quality and methods of statistical analysis, improving the reliability and therefore appeal of microarray analysis for a wide range of biological questions.

Radioimmunotherapy (RIT), in which a radionuclide conjugated to an antibody directed towards a tumor associated antigen (the radioimmunoconjugate) is administered in a therapeutic regimen, represents a significant addition to the treatment of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). RIT offers several advantages for this heterogenous disease, foremost being the ability to kill tumor cells adjacent to cells to which the radioimmunoconjugate is bound (the cross-fire effect). Thus, RIT is cytotoxic to tumor cells that may be inaccessible to the antibody, or do not express the target antigen in sufficient quantities for antibody binding.

Female interleukin-11 receptor alpha (IL-11Ralpha) deficient mice are infertile due to disrupted decidualization, suggesting a critical role for IL-11 and its target genes in implantation. The molecular targets of IL-11 in the uterus are unknown, but it is likely that IL-11 signaling modifies the expression of other genes important in decidualization.
