Unlabelled: Biodiversity loss is increasing worldwide, necessitating effective approaches to counteract negative trends. Here, we assessed aquatic macroinvertebrate biodiversity in two river catchments in Switzerland; one significantly degraded and associated with urbanisation and instream barriers, and one in a near-natural condition. Contrary to our expectations, environmental heterogeneity was lower in the near-natural stream, with enhanced productivity in the degraded system resulting in a greater range of environmental conditions.

A library of degradable poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) analogues (dPOx) with different length of the alkyl substituents was characterized in detail by gradient elution liquid chromatography. The hydrophobicity increased with increased side chain length as confirmed by a hydrophobicity row, established by reversed-phase liquid chromatography. Those dPOx were cytocompatible and formed colloidally stable nanoparticle (NP) formulations with positive zeta potential.

1,4-Bis(iodomethyl)benzene and 1,3,5-tris(iodomethyl)benzene were used as initiators for the cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) of 2-ethyl-2-oxazoline (EtOx) and its copolymerization with -butyl (3-(4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)propyl)carbamate (BocOx) or methyl 3-(4,5-dihydrooxazol-2-yl)propanoate (MestOx). Kinetic studies confirmed the applicability of these initiators.   • Whole-exome sequencing of glioma patients revealed that 16% carried rare deleterious POLE/POLD1 variants, with significant features indicating defective DNA proofreading and a correlation with tumor characteristics.
  • Glioblastoma patients with these variants had a notably shorter average overall survival of 21 months, and these genetic variants might also make glioma patients more responsive to immunotherapy and warrant ongoing surveillance for other cancer risks.

Aiming toward the development of tailored carrier materials for the cytostatics panobinostat and imatinib, an amphiphilic block copolymer composed of poly(2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) and a degradable poly(2-(3-phenylpropyl)-2-oxazoline) analogue () was synthesized a postpolymerization synthesis route based on reacylation of oxidized linear poly(ethylene imine). The obtained was found to readily self-assemble into well-defined micelles with a critical micelle concentration of 1 μg mL. The incubation of HUVEC cells with the blank micelles revealed their excellent cytocompatibility (up to 2 mg mL), thus confirming the polymers' suitability for potential drug delivery application.

Freshwater systems have undergone drastic alterations during the last century, potentially affecting cross-boundary resource transfers between aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems. One important connection is the export of biomass by emergent aquatic insects containing omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs), especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), that is scarce in terrestrial systems. Because of taxon-specific differences in PUFA content and functional traits, the contribution of different insect groups should be considered, in addition to total biomass export.

Background: Insufficient solubility and stability of bioactive small molecules as well as poor biocompatibility may cause low bioavailability and are common obstacles in drug development.
