Pharmacist-led sedative-hypnotic deprescribing in team-based primary care practice.

Background: Sedative-hypnotic (SH) medications are often used to treat chronic insomnia, with potentially serious long-term side effects. The objective of this study is to evaluate an interprofessional SH deprescribing program within a community team-based, primary care practice, with or without cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I).

Methods: Retrospective chart review for patients referred to the team pharmacist for SH deprescribing from February 2016 to June 2019.

A Mixed Methods Study Describing the Quality of Healthcare Received by Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Patients at a Large Integrated Health System.

Transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) patients have been seeking medical care in higher numbers and have faced unique social, personal, and health issues that affect the quality of care they receive. The purpose of this study was to conduct a mixed-methods study to describe TGNC care at Kaiser Permanente Mid-Atlantic States, a large integrated health system. We used a transgender registry to describe a TGNC patient population and compared healthcare utilization between TGNC patients and non-TGNC patients.

The Quality of Care of Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Patients: The Provider Perspective.

Background: Transgender and gender-nonconforming (TGNC) patients have inadequate quality of care. Few studies have examined the issues related to quality of care from the perspective of providers. The purpose of this pilot study was to understand the barriers and facilitators of quality TGNC care and develop recommendations for health systems.

Physician Experience with Direct-To-Consumer Genetic Testing in Kaiser Permanente.

Health systems and physicians nationwide aspire to consistently and reliably apply genetic and genomic information to guide disease prevention, management, and treatment. However, clinical information, including genetics/genomics data from within and outside of the care delivery system, is expanding rapidly. Between November 2017 and April 2018, we surveyed 1502 Permanente Medical Group primary care and specialist physicians to assess the degree to which direct-to-consumer genetic test results were being presented to physicians and identify genetics educational needs among physicians (response rate 15%).

Local Overdose Fatality Review Team Recommendations for Overdose Death Prevention.

This study compiled and detailed recommendations from Maryland Local Overdose Fatality Review Teams (LOFRTs) to provide state and local health departments with innovative strategies to address the worsening opioid epidemic and overdose-related deaths. LOFRTs consist of jurisdictional multiagency, multidisciplinary teams that share data to critically examine drug overdose cases. Goals include identification of risk factors and intervention opportunities to inform overdose prevention programs and policy.

Colchicine overdose with coingestion of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.

Colchicine has a low therapeutic index. Its toxic effects generally occur at doses ≥ 0.5 mg/kg.

A needs assessment study of hospital pharmacy residency preceptors.

Background: Canadian pharmacy residency programs rely on preceptors to support the growing demand of graduates wishing to pursue hospital residencies. Understanding the educational needs of these preceptors is important to ensure that they are well prepared to deliver successful programs.

Objective: To determine what new and experienced residency preceptors self-identify as learning needs in order to become more effective preceptors for pharmacy residents.

Trichotillomania in youth: a retrospective case series.

Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate the outcome of the naturalistic treatment of youth with Trichotillomania (TTM) in an anxiety disorders clinic sample.

Methods: A retrospective chart review was conducted on 11 treated patients between the ages of 6 and 17, with DSM-IV TTM.

Results: Ten patients were initially treated with a serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SRI), whereas one patient was initially treated with an antipsychotic.
