Article Synopsis
  • - Ocean acidification negatively impacts the exoskeleton of southern Tanner crabs, specifically affecting their ability to maintain hard, mineralized structures due to lower pH levels during prolonged exposure.
  • - Crabs at a pH of 7.5 showed a 38% reduction in claw microhardness and exhibited structural damage, including thinning and erosion of both claws and carapace, compared to those at pH 8.1.
  • - Chemical analysis revealed changes in the elemental content of the carapace, with reduced calcium and increased magnesium at lower pH, and a phase shift in calcium carbonate that suggests a transition from amorphous forms to more stable calcite at higher pH levels.
