The Rochester Epidemiology Project (REP) merges medical and residency information with environmental data to assess individual-level exposure to groundwater inorganic nitrogen and its effects on child and adolescent health.
A nested case-control study was performed involving children aged 7 to 18 from southeastern Minnesota to analyze the relationship between nitrogen levels in groundwater and various health conditions, using a sizable population sample of 29,270.
The findings indicate potential links between elevated nitrogen concentrations and specific health issues such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, thyroid disorders, and behavioral problems, highlighting the importance of utilizing REP data for environmental health research.
