This study assessed personal beliefs about the causes and meaning of having diabetes among the members of the Lumbee Indian tribe living in rural southeastern North Carolina. The sample included 20 males (50%) and 20 females (50%); the mean duration of having diabetes was 9.82 years.

When a mother and newborn must be separated because of the child's admission to the neonatal intensive care unit, feelings of disconnection, frustration, and fear can ensue. One way to increase involvement and decrease stress for mothers interested in breastfeeding is early initiation of breast pumping to stimulate milk production and provide essential nutrition for the infant when stable. Postpartum nurses are in an ideal position to teach new mothers about breast pumping, especially during evening and night shifts when a lactation consultant may not be available.
