Objectives: To evaluate the ability of an allometric 3/4 Power Model combined with the Galveston Formula (Galveston-3/4 PM Formula) to predict fluid resuscitation requirements in children suffering burn injuries in comparison with the frequently used Parkland Formula and Galveston Formula using the Du Bois formula for surface area estimation (Galveston-DB Formula).

Aim: To demonstrate that the Galveston-3/4 PM Formula is clinically equivalent to the Galveston-DB Formula for the estimation of fluid requirements in pediatric burn injury cases.

Background: Fluid resuscitation requirements differ in children suffering burn injuries when compared to adults.

Background: Remifentanil is a short-acting drug that allows us to study the specific respiratory effects of potent opioid analgesics. The purpose of this study is to describe the effects of a remifentanil infusion during spontaneous ventilation in children. Pharmacokinetic studies provide useful information on the time course of opioid blood concentrations; however, they cannot be easily translated into infusion administration guidelines for pediatric clinical practice.

Objective: During opioid administration, decreasing respiratory rate is typically used as a predictor of respiratory depression. Prior to opioid-induced apnea, progressively irregular breathing patterns have been noticed. We hypothesize that opioid administration to children will increase tidal volume variability (TV(var)) and that this will be a better predictor of respiratory depression than a decrease in respiratory rate.
