Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to find a connection between parvovirus-B19 and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infections and levels of apoptosis (cell death) markers in placentas from spontaneous abortions compared to elective terminations.
  • Researchers analyzed 194 placental samples (152 from spontaneous abortions and 42 controls), using techniques like H&E staining and immunohistochemistry to assess viral presence and apoptotic markers.
  • Results showed significantly higher apoptosis levels in spontaneous abortion cases, suggesting viral infections could contribute to increased apoptosis and potentially trigger spontaneous abortions.

Split hand/foot malformation is a heterogeneous congenital disorder mainly presented with a median cleft of hands or/and feet. It can be associated with long bone aplasia, a syndrome also known as split hand/foot syndrome with long bone deficiency (SHFLD), which is a very rare condition. We report a very rare case of a male fetus with SHFLD syndrome combined with fibular aplasia, tibial campomelia, and oligosyndactyly (FATCO) syndrome.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one the most common primary malignancies with high mortality and morbidity. The melanoma-associated antigen (MAGE) gene family includes several genes that are highly expressed in numerous human cancers, making many of them part of the cancer-testis antigen (CTA) family. MAGE-C1 is expressed in various malignancies but is absent in normal cells, except for the male germ line.

Parvoviruses are DNA viruses of small size. There have been a number of reports indicating the possible effects of B19 infections during pregnancy. These effects include spontaneous abortions, stillbirth, fetal damage, and quite often, fetal anemia with hydrops fetalis.

Congenital Herpes simplex virus (HSV) infection is considered a common pregnancy pathology that is not always easy to diagnose. This study aimed to present the spectrum of placental histopathological lesions in pregnancies complicated by HSV infection. MEDLINE and Google Scholar databases were searched using the keywords "HSV" and "placental histopathology" up to June 20, 2022.

Objective: Endometrial cancer is a threat to women health worldwide. Cylindromatosis (CYLD) enzyme is a tumour suppressor, considered an effective prognostic marker in various malignancies, but its role in endometrial carcinoma is not fully elucidated. Here, we sought to estimate the prognostic value of CYLD expression in endometrial carcinoma.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the role of apoptosis in trophoblastic differentiation related to spontaneous abortions, which has been under-researched.
  • Researchers examined 72 trophoblastic tissue samples, analyzing 42 from first-trimester spontaneous abortions and 30 from elective terminations, using specific staining methods to assess apoptosis.
  • Results showed higher levels of apoptosis in tissues from spontaneous abortions compared to normal pregnancies, and maternal age and first-time pregnancies were linked to increased instances of spontaneous abortion.
