Pediatric patients often receive procedural sedation for esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD), but this can lead to airway incidents and adverse events (AIAE).
A study compared the rates of AIAE in children who received topical pharyngeal anesthetics (TPA) as part of their sedation versus those who did not.
The results showed that those who received the benzocaine spray experienced a higher rate of AIAE, although most incidents were mild, with only a few patients facing serious adverse events.
