Objective: To describe the main barriers and facilitators perceived by the health care workers for the implementation of Pre- and Post-Ductal Oxygen Saturation (SPPD) as a detection method of Con genital Heart Disease in newborns, prior to hospital discharge.

Material And Method: From a cons tructivist research paradigm, a case study was carried out in three public hospitals in the Metropoli tan Region, Chile, two of them are high-complexity hospitals. The first one, the NEW Hospital, has recently started its activity, and the second one, the OLD Hospital, has been operating for many years.

An uncontrolled trial reported that sodium thiosulfate reduces formation of calcium kidney stones in humans, but this has not been established in a controlled human study or animal model. Using the genetic hypercalciuric rat, an animal model of calcium phosphate stone formation, we studied the effect of sodium thiosulfate on urine chemistries and stone formation. We fed genetic hypercalciuric rats normal food with or without sodium thiosulfate for 18 wk and measured urine chemistries, supersaturation, and the upper limit of metastability of urine.

Vitamin D3, an important seco-steroid hormone for the regulation of body calcium homeostasis, promotes immature myeloid precursor cells to differentiate into monocytes/macrophages. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) belongs to a nuclear receptor super-family that mediates the genomic actions of vitamin D3 and regulates gene expression by binding with vitamin D response elements in the promoter region of the cognate gene. Thus by regulating gene expression, VDR plays an important role in modulating cellular events such as differentiation, apoptosis, and growth.
