Effects of calving month, pasture conditions and management on the growth of Holstein-Friesian × Ankole crossbred calves in a semi-arid rangeland.

Daily weight gain of crossbred calves was studied in relation to seasonal changes in pasture quality and quantity, and management routines. A total of 171 and 56 calves were monitored up to the ages of 6 and 9 months, respectively, on ten farms in a semi-arid region of Uganda. Daily weight gains of calves were 288, 315 and 442 g/day at ages 0-2, 2-6 and 6-9 months, respectively.

Compliance to treatment in patients with chronic illness: A concept exploration.

Background: Patients' compliance to treatment is an important indicator for evaluating the successful management in chronic illnesses. Despite the fact an applicable definition of compliance is required to suitable intervention and research, this concept is not clear and there is no consensus concerning its meaning, definition, and measurement. The aim of this study was to explore the concept of compliance and to formulate a working definition.

Experiences of participation in occupations of women on long-term sick leave.

The majority of individuals on long-term sick leave experience negative effects in their lives associated with limitations on their participation, decreased income, and feelings of guilt. The aim was to describe the experiences that women on long-term sick leave have of participation in occupation. Unstructured interviews were used for the data collection, which involved eight women; a grounded theory approach was used.

Resistance to bacitracin in Streptococcus pyogenes from oropharyngeal colonization and noninvasive infections in Portugal was caused by two clones of distinct virulence genotypes.

During 2000-2007 in Lisbon, we identified 45 bacitracin-resistant Streptococcus pyogenes isolates among 1629 isolates: 24 from oropharyngeal healthy carriers (out of 1026), 21 from patients with noninvasive infections (out of 559) and zero from invasive infections (out of 44). Forty-four of those isolates, mainly of colonization, are low-level bacitracin-resistant members of the cMLS(B)-macrolide-resistant and tetracycline-susceptible emm28/ST52 clone previously detected in Europe, but only among clinical samples. One high-level bacitracin-resistant isolate, associated with a tonsillitis/pharyngitis episode, is cMLS(B)-macrolide-resistant and tetracycline-resistant member of the emm74/ST120 lineage, which was not previously known to include bacitracin-resistant isolates.

Living with incurable cancer at the end of life--patients' perceptions on quality of life.

This study describes incurably ill cancer patients' perceptions of the quality of life at the end of life. Purposeful sampling was used to get as comprehensive descriptions as possible about quality of life. Five patients participated in repeated focus groups.
