Association between caregiver and infant visual neurocognition.

Previous work has shown that caregiver attention shapes visual cognition in infants through dyadic interactions. Is this association measurable when visual cognition is objectively measured in caregivers and infants using comparable experimental paradigms? In the current study, we presented infants (N = 86) and caregivers (N = 78) with age-specific variants of the same preferential looking visual cognition task to investigate whether caregiver visual cognition was associated with their infants' visual cognition. In each trial of the task, two side-by-side flashing displays of coloured shapes were presented.

The impact of caregiver inhibitory control on infant visual working memory.

Visual working memory (VWM) emerges in the first year of life and has far-reaching implications for academic and later life outcomes. Given that caregivers play a significant role in shaping cognitive function in children, it is important to understand how they might impact VWM development as early as infancy. The current study investigated whether caregivers' efficiency of regulating inhibitory control was associated with VWM function in their infants.

Impact of thermal desorption tubes on the variability of exhaled breath data.

Due to the overall low abundance of volatile compounds in exhaled breath, it is necessary to preconcentrate the sample prior to traditional thermal desorption (TD) gas chromatography mass spectrometry analysis. While certain aspects of TD tubes, such as volatile storage, have been evaluated, many aspects remain uncharacterized. Two common TD tubes, Tenax TA and Biomonitoring 5TD tubes, were evaluated for background content and flow rate variability.

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Special Statement: Checklists for transabdominal cerclage.

The recent Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Consult Series #65 provides a comprehensive review of transabdominal cerclage. The current article condenses the Consult recommendations regarding patient selection, counseling, and management into 2 simple one-page checklists, one for the primary obstetrical provider and the other for the maternal-fetal medicine consultant or cerclage provider. Moreover, we provide sample templates for medical record notes to document preprocedure counseling and informed consent.

Sterilization and reuse of masks for a standardized exhaled breath collection device by autoclaving.

Exhaled breath research has been hindered by a lack of standardization in collection and analysis methodologies. Recently, the Respiration Collector forAnalysis (ReCIVA) sampling device has illustrated the potential to provide a consistent and convenient method for exhaled breath collection onto adsorbent media. However, the significant costs, compared to exhaled breath bags, associated with the standardized collector is believed to be the reason for limited widespread use by researchers in the exhaled breath field.

The first year in formal schooling improves working memory and academic abilities.

Neurocognition and academic abilities during the period of 4 and 7 years of age are impacted by both the transition from kindergarten to primary school and age-related developmental processes. Here, we used a school cut-off design to tease apart the impact of formal schooling from age, on working memory (WM) function, vocabulary, and numeracy scores. We compared two groups of children with similar age, across two years: first-graders (FG), who were enrolled into primary school the year that they became eligible and kindergarteners (KG), who were deferred school entry until the following year.

Investigation of an individual with background levels of exhaled isoprene: a case study.

Isoprene is one of the most abundant and most frequently evaluated volatile organic compounds in exhaled breath. Recently, several individuals with background levels of exhaled isoprene have been identified. Here, case study data are provided for an individual, identified from a previous study, with this low prevalence phenotype.

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Special Statement: Telemedicine in obstetrics-quality and safety considerations.

The frequency of telemedicine encounters has increased dramatically in recent years. This review summarizes the literature regarding the safety and quality of telemedicine for pregnancy-related services, including prenatal care, postpartum care, diabetes mellitus management, medication abortion, lactation support, hypertension management, genetic counseling, ultrasound examination, contraception, and mental health services. For many of these, telemedicine has several potential or proven benefits, including expanded patient access, improved patient satisfaction, decreased disparities in care delivery, and health outcomes at least comparable to those of traditional in-person encounters.

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Special Statement: Cognitive bias and medical error in obstetrics-challenges and opportunities.

The processes of diagnosis and management involve clinical decision-making. However, decision-making is often affected by cognitive biases that can lead to medical errors. This statement presents a framework of clinical thinking and decision-making and shows how these processes can be bias-prone.

Examining the effect of quality improvement initiatives on decreasing racial disparities in maternal morbidity.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the impact of quality improvement (QI) and patient safety initiatives and data disaggregation on racial disparities in severe maternal morbidity from hemorrhage (SMM-H).Our hospital began monitoring and reporting on SMM-overall and SMM-H rates in 2018 using administrative data. In March 2019, we began stratifying data by race and ethnicity and noted a disparity in rates, with non-Hispanic Black women having the highest SMM rates.

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Consult Series #62: Best practices in equitable care delivery-Addressing systemic racism and other social determinants of health as causes of obstetrical disparities.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define social determinants of health as "the conditions in the places where people live, learn, work, and play" that can affect health outcomes. Systemic racism is a root cause of the power and wealth imbalances that affect social determinants of health, creating disproportionate rates of comorbidities and adverse outcomes in the communities of racial and ethnic minority groups. Focusing primarily on disparities between Black and White individuals born in the United States, this document reviews the effects of social determinants of health and systemic racism on reproductive health outcomes and recommends multilevel approaches to mitigate disparities in obstetrical outcomes.

The management of pregnancies resulting from in vitro fertilization includes several recommended interventions at various times by various providers. To minimize the chance of errors of omission, the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine presents a patient-oriented checklist summarizing the recommended management of such pregnancies.

Background: Condensation of chromatin prior to enucleation is an essential component of terminal erythroid maturation, and defects in this process are associated with inefficient erythropoiesis and anemia. However, the mechanisms involved in this phenomenon are not well understood. Here, we describe a potential role for the histone variant H2A.

A regional survey evaluating patient experience seeking trial of labor after cesarean.

Objective: To evaluate access to trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) in a large metropolitan city.

Study Design: In 2012, a public tertiary care hospital in Houston, TX promoted its TOLAC services on social media, resulting in a surge of self-referrals. In 2018, an electronic survey was distributed by email to 200 women who had previously contacted the hospital regarding TOLAC and posted on 2 local social media TOLAC sites.

The Impact of Nutritional Supplementation on Sweat Metabolomic Content: A Proof-of-Concept Study.

Sweat is emerging as a prominent biosource for real-time human performance monitoring applications. Although promising, sources of variability must be identified to truly utilize sweat for biomarker applications. In this proof-of-concept study, a targeted metabolomics method was applied to sweat collected from the forearms of participants in a 12-week exercise program who ingested either low or high nutritional supplementation twice daily.

Rate normalization for sweat metabolomics biomarker discovery.

As the demand for real-time exercise performance feedback increases, excreted sweat has become a biosource of interest for continuous human performance assessment. For sweat to truly fulfill this requirement, analyte concentrations must be normalized to adequately assess day-to-day differences within and among individuals. In this manuscript, data are presented highlighting the use of accurate localized sweat rate as a means for ion and global metabolomic data normalization.

Enhancing Obstetric Safety Through Best Practices.

The pregnancy-related mortality rate in the US exceeds that of other developed nations and is marked by significant disparities in outcome by race. This article reviews the evidence supporting the implementation of a variety of best practices designed to reduce maternal mortality. Evidence from maternal mortality review committees suggests that delays in diagnosis, delays in initiation of treatment and use of ineffective treatments contribute to preventable cases of maternal death.

Pathophysiologic Origins of Brachial Plexus Injury.

Objective: To analyze the origins and consequences of cases of brachial plexus injuries and their relationship to shoulder dystocia.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study and identified all neonates with brachial plexus injury delivered at our institution between March 2012 and July 2019. A review was performed of the maternal and neonatal records of each neonate to identify obstetric antecedents, including the occurrence of shoulder dystocia and persistence of the injury.

Hyperacetylated chromatin domains mark cell type-specific genes and suggest distinct modes of enhancer function.

Stratification of enhancers by signal strength in ChIP-seq assays has resulted in the establishment of super-enhancers as a widespread and useful tool for identifying cell type-specific, highly expressed genes and associated pathways. We examine a distinct method of stratification that focuses on peak breadth, termed hyperacetylated chromatin domains (HCDs), which classifies broad regions exhibiting histone modifications associated with gene activation. We find that this analysis serves to identify genes that are both more highly expressed and more closely aligned to cell identity than super-enhancer analysis does using multiple data sets.

Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine Special Statement: Reducing the risk of transmitting infection by transvaginal ultrasound examination.

Recent surveys have shown widespread lapses in the procedures used to reduce the risk of transmitting infection via medical devices. Transvaginal ultrasound examination has the potential to transmit vaginal infections, including human papillomavirus. Areas of particular concern are the use of probe covers with high rates of leakage, disinfectants that are not effective against human papillomavirus, and coupling gel from multiple-use containers.

Reducing abdominal hysterectomy surgical site infections: A multidisciplinary quality initiative.

Background: To investigate abdominal hysterectomy surgical site infection (SSI) rates before and after implementation of an SSI care bundle.

Methods: An SSI bundle for abdominal hysterectomies was introduced in our hospital in April 2014 to reduce the SSI rate. The practices were divided into bundle elements around preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.

There are many organizations in the United States concerned with the improvement of patient safety and healthcare quality. In this overview, we provide a synopsis of the major entities whose work is relevant to maternal healthcare. For each organization, we summarize its mission, vision, major programs, and relationships with other entities.

Evaluation of a standardized collection device for exhaled breath sampling onto thermal desorption tubes.

The Respiration Collector for In Vitro Analysis (ReCIVA) sampler, marketed by Owlstone Medical, provides a step forward in exhaled breath sampling through active sampling directly onto thermal desorption (TD) tubes. Although an improvement to the issues surrounding breath bag sampling, the ReCIVA device, first released in 2015, is a relatively new research and clinical tool that requires further exploration. Here, data are presented comparing two distinct ReCIVA devices.
