Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 230 patients evaluated, TE showed strong diagnostic accuracy for detecting cirrhosis and advanced fibrosis, with area under the receiver operating characteristic curves of 0.88 and 0.86, outperforming other non-invasive tests.
  • * The findings suggest that LSM values above 10 kPa indicate a high probability of advanced fibrosis, while values below 6 kPa almost completely rule out significant fibrosis, necessitating further discussion for values between 6 and 10 kPa.

Background: The performance and reliability criteria for Aixplorer MACH30 (SS) in chronic liver diseases (CLD) have not been validated.

Aims: The objectives were to define the optimal procedure, the accuracy for fibrosis and steatosis diagnosis, and the reliability criteria using SS.

Methods: Patients had 2D-shear wave elastography (SWE) and ultraSound-guided controlled attenuation parameter (SCAP) performed in triplicate at the mid-axillary line (MAL), posterior axillary line (PAL), and anterior axillary line (AAL).

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is becoming the most common liver disease worldwide, and its burden is expected to increase due to the growing epidemic of obesity and diabetes. The key challenge among NAFLD patients is to identify those with advanced fibrosis (F3F4), who are at high risk of developing complications and will benefit from specialized management and treatment with new pharmacotherapies when they are approved. Liver biopsy appears unrealistic and unsuitable in practice, given the large number of high-risk patients and its well-known limitations.

Non-invasive diagnosis and quantification of hepatic steatosis rely on two different but complementary approaches: biomarkers or imaging techniques, either ultrasound-based such as liver ultrasonography and controlled attenuation parameter (CAP), or computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Scores for the detection of steatosis have not gained much popularity in clinical practice so far. CAP, using the M probe, is the most promising technique but needs to be implemented with the XL probe and compared to ultrasound that, despite its limitations, remains the most widely used method.

Background And Aims: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) demonstrated potent and sustainable antiviral efficacy and a good safety profile in patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) in controlled clinical trials. Real-world data are important to confirm effectiveness and safety data in patient populations encountered in routine clinical practice.

Methods: This non-interventional, prospective, 36-month study included treatment-naïve and treatment-experienced patients with CHB initiating their first TDF regimen (monotherapy or combination therapy) in routine clinical practice in France.

Aim: To study the efficacy and factors associated with a sustained virological response (SVR) in chronic hepatitis C (CHC) relapsing patients.

Methods: Out of 1228 CHC patients treated with pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) and ribavirin (RBV), 165 (13%) had a relapse. Among these, 62 patients were retreated with PEG-IFN-α2a or -α2b and RBV.

Background/aims: Accuracy of transient elastography (TE) in hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has not been well established. We aimed to compare the performances of TE for the assessment of liver fibrosis in patients with chronic HBV or hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. A secondary analysis was performed to assess whether or not alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels would impact on the accuracy of TE.

Unlabelled: A sustained virologic response (SVR) in patients with chronic hepatitis C receiving pegylated interferon (PEG-IFN) plus ribavirin is defined as undetectable serum HCV-RNA at 24 weeks (W+24) posttreatment follow-up. Viral load outcome in patients with virological relapse (VR) has not been explored. This study evaluated whether the assessment of serum HCV-RNA 12 weeks (W+12) after the end of treatment was as relevant as W+24 to evaluate SVR in 573 patients who received combination PEG-IFN and ribavirin and had a virological response at the end of treatment.

Background: Viral kinetics during therapy provides information on how to individualize treatment. To determine the benefit of assessing positive predictive values (PPVs) and negative predictive values (NPVs) of rapid virological responses (RVRs) and early virological responses (EVRs), on-treatment outcomes in chronic hepatitis C patients were examined.

Methods: A total of 408 patients (221 treatment-naive) treated with pegylated interferon-alpha2b and ribavirin were included.
