Background: Malnutrition in hospitalised patients is an important and underestimated problem, with a negative impact on outcome and survival - not only in surgical patients. There is a discrepancy between optimal treatment as defined in relevant guidelines on clinical nutrition and the clinical reality. The Main reason for this discrepancy is the lack of established structures for nutrition medicine as an integral part of clinical routines.
