Occipital nerve neuralgia is a rare cause of severe headache, and may be difficult to treat. We report the case of a patient with occipital nerve neuralgia caused by pathological contact of the nerve with the occipital artery. The pain was refractory to medical treatment.

We have investigated gene regulatory mechanisms acting on the expression of CXCR4 in cultured rat Schwann cells and found that receptor expression at transcript- and protein levels is directly dependent on intracellular cyclic AMP. Such increased levels of CXCR4 expression were found to be efficiently reversed by the action of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNFalpha).

Schwann cells have been attributed an important role in peripheral nerve regeneration; therefore, attention has been drawn to regulatory factors expressed by these glial cells. Here, we demonstrate that Mash2, a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor previously shown to be crucial for placenta development, is expressed by Schwann cells of adult peripheral nerves.
