Background Helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) documentaries attract millions of viewers, and publicly available patient stories on Air Ambulance websites are vital to raise awareness and funding for Air Ambulance charities in the United Kingdom (UK). Despite abundant research investigating how fictional programs and news outlets present patient health outcomes, there are no comprehensive studies that investigate how non-fictional HEMS documentaries or Air Ambulance websites present patient outcomes. The aim of this study is to capture the frequency of poor outcomes (mortality) in patients broadcasted on documentaries focusing on HEMS and the patient stories section of UK Air Ambulance websites.

Although infectious disease dynamics are often analyzed at the macro-scale, increasing numbers of drug-resistant infections highlight the importance of within-host modeling that simultaneously solves across multiple scales to effectively respond to epidemics. We review multiscale modeling approaches for complex, interconnected biological systems and discuss critical steps involved in building, analyzing, and applying such models within the discipline of model credibility. We also present our two tools: CaliPro, for calibrating multiscale models (MSMs) to datasets, and tunable resolution, for fine- and coarse-graining sub-models while retaining insights.

The California mastitis test (CMT) is a simple cow-side indicator of the somatic cell count (SCC) in milk, providing a useful tool in identifying cases of subclinical mastitis in cattle. Mastitis, and in particular subclinical mastitis, is a major concern in Ethiopia and Nigeria, yet detection is challenging due to cost and access to commercial CMT reagents. Commercially available domestic detergents from Ethiopia and Nigeria were compared (n = 3 for each country) with the UK commercial CMT reagent in their ability to detect high SCC (>400,000 cells/ml milk).

The use of artificial insemination (AI) has great potential to improve smallholder dairy herds in Africa, however poor success and, in some situations, high costs in Kenya, have been discouraging.  Effective AI requires accurate oestrus detection and the measurement of progesterone (P4) can be used to indicate oestrus as well as non-pregnancy.  A cow-side progesterone lateral flow test, , was evaluated as an aid to detect oestrus and non-pregnancy in Kenyan dairy cows, and assessed for association with AI efficiency.

Stem cell maintenance in multilayered shoot apical meristems (SAMs) of plants requires strict regulation of cell growth and division. Exactly how the complex milieu of chemical and mechanical signals interact in the central region of the SAM to regulate cell division plane orientation is not well understood. In this paper, simulations using a newly developed multiscale computational model are combined with experimental studies to suggest and test three hypothesized mechanisms for the regulation of cell division plane orientation and the direction of anisotropic cell expansion in the corpus.
