The Tri-Service Microbiome Consortium (TSMC) was founded to enhance collaboration, coordination, and communication of microbiome research among DoD organizations and to facilitate resource, material and information sharing among consortium members, which includes collaborators in academia and industry. The 2023 annual symposium was a hybrid meeting held in Washington DC on 26-27 September 2023 concurrent with the virtual attendance, with oral and poster presentations and discussions centered on microbiome-related topics within five broad thematic areas: 1) Environmental Microbiome Characterization; 2) Microbiome Analysis; 3) Human Microbiome Characterization; 4) Microbiome Engineering; and 5) In Vitro and In Vivo Microbiome Models. Collectively, the symposium provided an update on the scope of current DoD and DoD-affiliated microbiome research efforts and fostered collaborative opportunities.

The tunability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) makes them exceptional materials for the development of highly selective, low-power sensors for toxic gas detection. Herein, we demonstrate enhanced detection of NO gas by a MOF-based electrical impedance sensor made using a unique mixed metal MOF-on-MOF synthesis. A combined experimental and computational study was performed using the exemplar NiMg-MOF-74 to understand the fundamental structure-property relationships behind metal mixing and MOF film synthesis methods on sensor performance.

Complementary X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and Raman spectroscopy studies were conducted on various UCl concentrations in alkali chloride salt compositions. The samples were 5 mol % UCl in LiCl (S1), 5 mol % UCl in KCl (S2), 5 mol % UCl in LiCl-KCl eutectic (S4), 50 mol % UCl in KCl (S5), and 20 mol % UCl in KCl (S6) molar concentrations. Samples were heated to 800 °C and allowed to cool to room temperature with measurements performed at selected temperatures; the highest temperatures showed the most stability and will be primarily referenced for conclusions.

This study assessed the elemental status of cross-bred dairy cows in small holder farms in Sri Lanka, with the aim to establish the elemental baseline and identify possible deficiencies. For this purpose, 458 milk, hair, serum and whole blood samples were collected from 120 cows in four regions of Northern and Northwestern Sri Lanka, (namely Vavaniya, Mannar, Jaffna and Kurunegala). Porous liquids (PLs), which are solvent-based systems that contain permanent porosity due to the incorporation of a solid porous host, are of significant interest for the capture of greenhouse gases, including CO. Type 3 PLs formed by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as the nanoporous host provide a high degree of chemical turnability for gas capture. The endocannabinoidome (eCBome) is the expanded endocannabinoid system (ECS) and studies show that there is a link between this system and how it modulates alcohol induced neuroinflammation. Using conditional knockout (cKO) mice with selective deletion of cannabinoid type 2 receptors (CB2Rs) in dopamine neurons (DAT-) and in microglia (Cx3Cr1-), we investigated how CB2Rs modulate behavioral and neuroinflammation induced by alcohol. Behavioral tests including locomotor and wheel running activity, rotarod performance test, and alcohol preference tests were used to evaluate behavioral changes induced by alcohol.
