Batch and continuous fixed bed adsorption of copper (II) from acid mine drainage (AMD) using green and recyclable adsorbent from cellulose microcrystals (CMCs).

The CMCs are viable materials for applications in industry and process innovation for removing heavy metal ions since they may be used in static and dynamic adsorption processes. It is necessary to develop simple, low-cost water treatment methods that use organic, biodegradable polymers such as nanomaterial-modified cellulose microcrystals. The column technique was used to investigate the effects of operational parameters such as pH, bed depth, concentration and flow rate.

Meeting report of the seventh annual Tri-Service Microbiome Consortium Symposium.

The Tri-Service Microbiome Consortium (TSMC) was founded to enhance collaboration, coordination, and communication of microbiome research among DoD organizations and to facilitate resource, material and information sharing among consortium members, which includes collaborators in academia and industry. The 2023 annual symposium was a hybrid meeting held in Washington DC on 26-27 September 2023 concurrent with the virtual attendance, with oral and poster presentations and discussions centered on microbiome-related topics within five broad thematic areas: 1) Environmental Microbiome Characterization; 2) Microbiome Analysis; 3) Human Microbiome Characterization; 4) Microbiome Engineering; and 5) In Vitro and In Vivo Microbiome Models. Collectively, the symposium provided an update on the scope of current DoD and DoD-affiliated microbiome research efforts and fostered collaborative opportunities.

Exceptional Electrical Detection of Trace NO via Mixed Metal MOF-on-MOF Film-Based Sensors.

The tunability of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) makes them exceptional materials for the development of highly selective, low-power sensors for toxic gas detection. Herein, we demonstrate enhanced detection of NO gas by a MOF-based electrical impedance sensor made using a unique mixed metal MOF-on-MOF synthesis. A combined experimental and computational study was performed using the exemplar NiMg-MOF-74 to understand the fundamental structure-property relationships behind metal mixing and MOF film synthesis methods on sensor performance.

Formation of β-UO from UCl Salt Compositions under Oxygen Exposure.

Complementary X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and Raman spectroscopy studies were conducted on various UCl concentrations in alkali chloride salt compositions. The samples were 5 mol % UCl in LiCl (S1), 5 mol % UCl in KCl (S2), 5 mol % UCl in LiCl-KCl eutectic (S4), 50 mol % UCl in KCl (S5), and 20 mol % UCl in KCl (S6) molar concentrations. Samples were heated to 800 °C and allowed to cool to room temperature with measurements performed at selected temperatures; the highest temperatures showed the most stability and will be primarily referenced for conclusions.

We demonstrate that selective adipocyte deficiency of the oxygen-sensor HIF-prolyl hydroxylase (PHD2) gene overcomes BAT dormancy at thermoneutrality.

Revealing the link between gut microbiota and brain tumor risk: a new perspective from Mendelian randomization.

Background: Recent studies have shown that gut microbiota may be related to the occurrence of brain tumors, but direct evidence is lacking. This study used the Mendelian randomization study (MR) method to explore the potential causal link between gut microbiota and brain tumors.

Method: We analyzed the genome-wide association data between 211 gut microbiota taxa and brain tumors, using the largest existing gut microbiota Genome-Wide Association Studies meta-analysis data (n=13266) and combining it with brain tumor data in the IEU OpenGWAS database.

Breast Milk and Necrotizing Enterocolitis in Congenital Heart Disease: A Case-Control Study.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is a complication that can affect infants with congenital heart disease (CHD). The objective of this study is to determine whether breast milk, which is associated with decreased incidence of NEC in preterm infants, is protective in infants with CHD. Retrospective case-control study of infants ≥ 33 weeks gestational age with CHD who underwent cardiac surgery during their admission to the Infant Cardiac Unit from 2008 to 2017.

Assessment of Elemental Deficiency of Crossbred Dairy Cows and Mineral Composition in Natural Feed and Nutritional Supplements in the Northern and Northwestern Provinces in Sri Lanka.

This study assessed the elemental status of cross-bred dairy cows in small holder farms in Sri Lanka, with the aim to establish the elemental baseline and identify possible deficiencies. For this purpose, 458 milk, hair, serum and whole blood samples were collected from 120 cows in four regions of Northern and Northwestern Sri Lanka, (namely Vavaniya, Mannar, Jaffna and Kurunegala). Farmers also provided a total of 257 samples of feed, which included local fodder as well as 79 supplement materials.

The endocannabinoidome (eCBome) is the expanded endocannabinoid system (ECS) and studies show that there is a link between this system and how it modulates alcohol induced neuroinflammation. Using conditional knockout (cKO) mice with selective deletion of cannabinoid type 2 receptors (CB2Rs) in dopamine neurons (DAT-) and in microglia (Cx3Cr1-), we investigated how CB2Rs modulate behavioral and neuroinflammation induced by alcohol. Behavioral tests including locomotor and wheel running activity, rotarod performance test, and alcohol preference tests were used to evaluate behavioral changes induced by alcohol.

National study on the risks of COVID-19 infection for paediatric kidney transplant recipients: a retrospective, cross-sectional study.

Introduction: During the COVID-19 pandemic, evidence emerged that immunosuppressed children were less affected by COVID-19 infections compared with immunosuppressed adults. The aim of our study was to investigate how COVID-19 infections affected paediatric kidney transplant recipients (pKTR) in the UK.

Methods: Questionnaires regarding COVID-19 infection data and care of pKTR during the COVID-19 pandemic were sent to all 13 UK paediatric nephrology centres examining asymptomatic and symptomatic pKTR with positive COVID-19 PCR testing from 1 April 2020 to 1 December 2021.
