Diet and habitat use of frillneck lizards in a seasonal tropical environment.

A population of frillneck lizards, Chlamydosaurus kingii, was monitored by mark-recapture and telemetry over a 2 year period in Kakadu National Park. The aims of the study were to document changes in diet, growth, condition and habitat use between the wet and dry seasons of northern Australia, in light of recent research examining seasonal variation in the physiology of this species. Frillneck lizards feed on a diverse range of invertebrates in both seasons, even though there is a substantial reduction in food avail-ability in the dry season.

An open study of the effects of sertraline on adolescent major depression.

This open study investigated the effects of sertraline in treating 13 adolescents, ages 12 to 18, who were hospitalized for treatment of a major depressive episode. The sample included 7 adolescents with nonendogenous depression and 6 with endogenous depression, as diagnosed by both Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) and Kiddie-SADS-P DSM-III-R endogenous subtype criteria. These patients were followed for an inpatient length of stay ranging from 9 to 38 days (mean 19 days), with later outpatient follow-up for a total of 12 weeks.

Seasonal activity and energetics of two species of varanid lizards in tropical Australia.

The field metabolic rates (FMR) and rates of water flux were measured in two species of varanid lizards over five periods of the year in tropical Australia. The energetics of these species were further investigated by directly measuring activity (locomotion) and body temperatures of free-ranging animals by radiotelemetry, and by measuring standard metabolic rate (over a range of body temperatures) and activity metabolism in the laboratory. Seasonal differences in the activity and energetics were found in these goannas despite similar, high daytime temperatures throughout the year in tropical Australia.

Glucagon lowers canine biliary cholesterol output at physiologic doses.

Pharmacologic doses of glucagon affect canine bile secretion by increasing bile flow while simultaneously decreasing biliary cholesterol output. The present study was performed to determine if physiologic doses of glucagon reduce biliary cholesterol output. Awake dogs received both intravenous 1% sodium taurocholate (50 ml/hr) to stabilize bile flow and somatostatin (12 micrograms/kg/hr) to suppress endogenous pancreatic hormone release.

Physical and biotic determinants of space utilization by the Galapagos land iguana (Conolophus pallidus).

Home ranges of the Galapagos land iguana (Conolophus pallidus) were examined with respect to food availability and the thermal environment. Activity patterns, the amount of space used per day, and time required to use the entire home range were also investigated. The effects of, and the relationships between, these factors vary seasonally, as do home range sizes and preferred body temperatures.

The effect of the thermal environment on the ability of hatchling Galapagos land iguanas to avoid predation during dispersal.

During the month of February 1979, several hundred hatchling land iguanas (Conolophus pallidus) were observed emerging from their natal burrows in a 2 ha communal nesting area on Isla Santa Fe, Galapagos Islands. During this emergence, as many as nine Galapagos hawks were observed to patrol the nesting area and attack hatchling iguanas.The hypothesis that the ability of hatchling land iguanas to escape predation could be influenced by the interaction of the physiological state of the lizards and the thermal environment was analyzed using (1) empirical data on the effect of body temperature (T ) on locomotory ability of iguanas and (2) biophysical modeling of the T 's of hatchlings under natural conditions.
