Computer tomography-derived skeletal muscle index normalized for height in conjunction with muscle density enables single modality-based sarcopenia assessment that accounts for all diagnostic criteria and cutoff recommendations as per the widely accepted European consensus. Yet, the standard approach to quantify skeletal musculature at the third lumbar vertebra is limited for certain patient groups, such as lung cancer patients who receive chest CT for tumor staging that does not encompass this lumbar level. As an alternative, this retrospective study assessed sarcopenia in lung cancer patients treated with curative intent at the tenth thoracic vertebral level using appropriate cutoffs.

Background: The objective of this nationwide, registry-based study was to compare the two most frequently used procedures for the palliative treatment of a malignant pleural effusion (MPE) and to evaluate differentiated indications for these two procedures.

Introduction: Detection of disseminated cancer cells (DCC) in bone marrow (BM) of patients with early-stage NSCLC has been associated with poor outcome. However, the phenotype, and hence relevant therapy targets, of DCCs in BM are unknown. Background: Hyperthermic perfusion of the pleural cavity with cisplatin after pleurectomy/decortication is an additional therapeutic option to reduce local relapse of malignant pleural tumours. Although there are data on the clinical effect, only little is known about the local impact on human lung tissue by cisplatin. Study Aim: The 8th edition of the TNM classification combined with the latest update of the S3-guideline (by AWMF/Scientific Medical Societies in Germany) on prevention, diagnosis, therapy and follow-up of lung cancer led to several changes in staging and treatment of lung cancer. Background: This retrospective study analyzed the effectiveness of intrathoracic negative pressure therapy for debilitated patients with empyema and compared the short-term and long-term outcomes of three different intrapleural vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) techniques.

Methods: We investigated 43 consecutive (pre)septic patients with poor general condition (Karnofsky index ≤ 50 %) and multimorbidity (≥ 3 organ diseases) or immunosuppression, who had been treated for primary, postoperative, or recurrent pleural empyema with VAC in combination with open window thoracostomy (OWT-VAC) with minimally invasive technique (Mini-VAC), and instillation (Mini-VAC-Instill).

Results: The overall duration of intrathoracic vacuum therapy was 14 days (5-48 days).

The TET family of dioxygenases (TET1/2/3) can convert 5-methylcytosine (5 mC) into 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5 hmC) and has been shown to be involved in active and passive DNA demethylation. Here, we demonstrate that altering TET dioxygenase levels within physiological range can affect DNA methylation dynamics of HEK293 cells. Overexpression of TET1 increased global 5 hmC levels and was accompanied by mild DNA demethylation of promoters, gene bodies and CpG islands.

Enthusiasm for minimally invasive thoracic surgery is increasing. Thoracoscopy plays a significant therapeutic role in the fibrinopurulent stage (stage II) of empyema, in which loculated fluid cannot often be adequately drained by chest tube alone. Several observations have pointed to a major pathogenic role of somatostatin depletion with respect to amyloid accumulation, which is often thought to be the crucial event in a cascade leading to Alzheimer's disease (AD). As methylation of CpG islands plays an important role in gene silencing, we studied the methylation status of the CpG islands in the promoters of somatostatin (SST) and in that of its receptor subtype in the cerebral cortex, SSTR4, in tissue samples from the middle temporal (Brodmann area 22) and superior frontal gyrus (Brodmann area 9) of 5 severely affected AD patients aged 72-94 years (Braak stages V-C or VI-C) and 5 non-demented controls aged 50-92 years. Bisulfite sequencing of DNA from cortical gray and infracortical white matter showed that the DNA methylation status at the promoters of SST and SSTR4 did not significantly differ between AD and control samples in any of the regions analyzed.

Testosterone (T) regulates expression of protein-encoding genes directly through androgen receptor (AR) targeting androgen response element (ARE) in gene promoters or indirectly through non-genotropic mechanisms, but only limited information is available about T effects on expression of gene-regulatory non-coding miRNAs. Here, we investigate the effect of T on miRNA expression profiles in the female mouse liver using miRXplore microarrays and quantitative RT-PCR. T treatment for 3 weeks induced upregulation of the 6 miRNAs miR-22, miR-690, miR-122, let-7A, miR-30D and let-7D, reaching maximal expression at different time-points during T treatment.

The aim of study was to investigate the pattern of mediastinal lymph node metastases in patients with colorectal cancer metastasis. Twenty-four pulmonary metastasectomies with mediastinal lymphadenectomies were performed on 19 patients (14 unilateral and five bilateral operations).
