Article Synopsis
  • Flexible endoscopes need thorough manual cleaning to prevent pathogen transmission, which is crucial for effective high-level disinfection.
  • The study compared two different cleaning detergents—non-enzymatic detergent-disinfectant (NEDD) and enzymatic detergent (ED)—across twelve endoscopes to see which produced better cleaning results.
  • Results showed that using ED led to a greater reduction in ATP (a marker for biological contamination) and higher acceptability rates post-cleaning, indicating that enzymatic cleaners are more effective than non-enzymatic options for endoscope hygiene.

Objective: Increasingly, maternal administration of 17-α-hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17-OHPC) is utilized to prevent preterm birth, but the fetal safety of 17-OHPC is still a matter of concern. This study aimed to assess whether exposure to 17-OHPC during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy affects fetal biometry in twin gestations.

Methods: This study included a subset of women with a twin pregnancy who had been previously included in a randomized clinical trial comparing the effectiveness of 17-OHPC and placebo on neonatal outcomes and preterm birth rates in multiple pregnancy.

Couples making the transition to parenthood experience challenges that can threaten the quality and stability of their relationships and the health of family members. Currently, the educational infrastructure to support the delivery of couple-relationship education during the transition to parenthood is limited. Because new-parent couples interact with the health care system at many points during this transition time, an opportunity exists for strengthening couple relationships within the system to improve the well-being of adults and children.

There is a certain degree of foetal-maternal transfusion in every pregnancy. The possibilities for using intact foetal cells extracted from maternal blood for prenatal diagnosis are limited. Recently real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques have allowed the identification and quantification of foetal DNA in the maternal blood.

Streptococcus pneumoniae is the most common cause of community-acquired pneumonia and it is also a common cause of sinusitis, otitis media, bacteremia and meningitis. The increasing resistance to antimicrobial agents, now endemic in many countries, reflects an uncontrolled use of antibiotics. A good antibiotics policy and vaccination are at the moment the only way to control efficaciously the increasing antibiotic resistance of Streptococcus pneumoniae.
