Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates the short-term effectiveness, predictability, stability, and safety of the Artiflex Toric phakic intraocular lens for correcting myopia with astigmatism in 115 eyes over 6 months.
  • At the 6-month mark, 99% of patients achieved uncorrected visual acuity of 20/40 or better, with a majority maintaining close alignment to their intended correction.
  • Although there were some minor complications, the lens demonstrated stable visual results and raises questions about pigment deposits that need further research.

Article Synopsis
  • In 2004, a group from the Botanical Institute of the University of Essen collected around 150 microfungi species while exploring the Tatra region in Slovakia.
  • Several of these species are new to science, and some are newly identified in Slovakia, including Ramularia liliicola and Puccinia asarina.
  • All collected specimens have been archived in the Herbarium ESS, specifically in the Mycotheca Parva collection.

During our investigation on microfungi in North Rhine Westphalia in the years 2002 and 2003 we were able to collect and identify some new and rare species of microfungi as parasites and saprophytes on wild and ornamental plants. Some of these like Erysiphe elevata (BURILL.) U.

In addition to the collection of Ascomycotina in the Carnic Alps (see New, rare or remarkable microfungi in the Italian Alps (Carnic Alps) part I ) we were able to treasure about 300 species of parasitic and saprophytic microfungi. Among them Basidiomycetes, Ascomycetes and Deuteromycets like Bostrichonema polygoni (UNGER) SCHROT. on Polygonum viviparum L.

During our observations in the SE part of the Carnic Alps in the year 2003 we were able to collect and identify 35 ascomycetes on trees and dead wood. Among these one can find numerous ascomycetes of different orders e.g.

On the occasion of the great excursion of the Botanical Institute of the University of Essen in the year 2000 we were able to collect about 250 species of parasitic and saprophytic microfungi in eastern Greece. Dominant were Ascomycetes, Basidiomycetes and Deuteromycetes, for example Puccinia convolvuli on Calystegia silvatica, Puccinia caricina on Carex flava, Ramularia cynoglossi on Cynoglossum creticum, Phyllosticta juglandis and Marssonina juglandis on Juglans regia, Erysiphe cynoglossi on Echium italicum and Hendersonia culmiseda on Phragmites australis. Many of our collections contain rare and to a great extend unknown species for the area of investigation.

During a botanical excursion of the University of Essen in the year 2002 to North-, Central- and South-Anatolia we have collected representatives of about 100 genera of microfungi as parasites or saprophytes on crops and wild plants. Some of them are new for Turkey: Passalora dubia on Atriplex hortensis, Pseudocercospora ligustri on Ligustrum ovalifolium, Passalora smilacis on Smilax aspera, Uromyces limonii on Limonium spec., Puccinia jasmini on Jasminim spec.

Objective: To evaluate safety, efficacy, predictability, stability, complications, and patient satisfaction after implantation of Artisan toric phakic intraocular lenses (TPIOLs) for the correction of myopia or hyperopia with astigmatism.

Design: Prospective, nonrandomized, comparative (self-controlled) multicenter trial.

Participants: Seventy eyes of 53 patients (mean, 35 years; range, 22-59 years) with preoperative spherical equivalent between +6.

The three-dimensional structure of the major coat protein of bacteriophage M13, solubilized in detergent micelles, has been determined using heteronuclear multidimensional NMR and restrained molecular dynamics. The protein consists of two alpha-helices, running from residues 8 to 16 and 25 to 45, respectively. These two helices are connected by a flexible and distorted helical hinge region.

We describe a 51-year-old man in whom chronic maxillary sinusitis developing from a deep periodontal pocket, at 26, gave rise to cellulitis of the left orbit. The immediate cause was a fracture of the left zygomatic bone with some displacement of the infraorbital margin and the orbital floor. Treatment consisted of drainage and antibiotic medication.

A group of 30 consecutive HLA-B27 positive acute anterior uveitis (AAU) patients was compared to 30 consecutive HLA-B27 negative AAU patients. The B27 positive group was characterized by male preponderance, earlier age of onset, unilateral uveitis and favourable outcome with therapy. It is concluded that HLA-B27 typing is a useful diagnostic discriminant in AAU.

HLA-B27 typing of 103 acute anterior uveitis (AAU) patients showed that 49 (48%) were positive for this antigen. Of these HLA-B27 positive AAU patients, 27 (55%) had ankylosing spondylitis (AS) according to the New York criteria. The 22 HLA-B27 positive AAU patients without AS, however, also showed symptoms and signs of AS.

The cellular requirements for the generation of cytotoxicity in mixed lymphocyte reaction (MLR) across an H-2K mutant difference were analyzed. Treatment of C57BL/6 lymphocytes with either anti-Lyt-1 or anti-Lyt-2 serum and complement strongly reduced their capacity to mount a cytotoxic response against the B6.C-H-2ba mutant.
