Purpose: Patient-specific titanium implants are increasingly used in orbital trauma as a means of achieving improved surgical outcomes as well as decreasing postoperative complications; however, the data to support their use remain limited. The purpose of this study is to compare the complication rates and accuracy of orbital reconstruction using preformed titanium mesh implants and patient-specific implants.

Methods: The authors conducted a retrospective cohort study consisting of patients with orbital floor and/or medial wall fractures treated by reconstruction with either preformed or patient-specific implants from August 1, 2015 to December 31, 2020.

Engineered block polysaccharides is a relatively new class of biomacromolecules consisting of chemical assembly of separate block structures at the chain termini. In contrast to conventional, laterally substituted polysaccharide derivatives, the block arrangement allows for much higher preservation of inherent chain properties such as biodegradability and stimuli-responsive self-assembly, while at the same time inducing new macromolecular properties. Abundant, carbon neutral, and even recalcitrant biomass is an excellent source of blocks, opening for numerous new uses of biomass for a wide range of novel biomaterials.

Overconsumption, or eating beyond the point of homeostasis, is a key feature in the development of obesity. Although people are consuming beyond the point of homeostasis, they are not consuming constantly or indefinitely. Thus, there is likely a mechanism that acts to terminate periods of food intake at some point beyond satiation and prior to aversion, or the negative effects of extreme excess (nausea, bloating, etc.

In August 2017, after Hurricane Harvey made landfall, almost 52 inches of rain fell during a three-day period along the Gulf Coast Region of Texas, including Harris County, where Houston is located. Harris County was heavily impacted with over 177,000 homes and buildings (approximately 12 percent of all buildings in the county) experiencing flooding. The objective of this study was to measure 13 heavy metals in soil in residential areas and to assess cancer and non-cancer risk for children and adults after floodwaters receded.

Nocardia are gram-positive, filamentous bacteria that have the potential to cause serious disease, particularly in immunocompromised patients. Nocardia may cause a complex clinical picture, with radiologic features that can mimic other infectious organisms or malignancy. The organisms are not easily identified on cytologic examination given their weak staining with routine preparations and because they may be obscured by the associated inflammatory exudate.

Article Synopsis
  • Strictures commonly occur in Crohn's disease, and while surgery and endoscopic dilation are standard treatments, this study investigates if intensive drug therapy can effectively treat strictures with inflammatory components, challenging the idea that drug therapy is contraindicated.
  • An open-label, single-centre randomised controlled trial in Australia involved patients aged 18 or older with de novo or postoperative intestinal strictures, assessing the effectiveness of intensive high-dose adalimumab combined with thiopurine versus standard adalimumab therapy.
  • The trial aimed to measure the primary endpoint of improvement in obstructive symptoms after 12 months; 123 patients were screened, with 77 participating in the study, which was registered and completed

Spatially resolved characterization of the transcriptome and proteome promises to provide further clarity on cancer pathogenesis and etiology, which may inform future clinical practice through classifier development for clinical outcomes. However, batch effects may potentially obscure the ability of machine learning methods to derive complex associations within spatial omics data. Profiling thirty-five stage three colon cancer patients using the GeoMX Digital Spatial Profiler, we found that mixed-effects machine learning (MEML) methods† may provide utility for overcoming significant batch effects to communicate key and complex disease associations from spatial information.

Purpose: After tooth extraction in the posterior maxilla, bone resorption often limits implant placement unless additional grafting procedures are performed. However, it is difficult to predict the amount of bone that will remain after extraction based on current evidence. The purpose of this study was to develop a method for predicting the postextraction alveolar bone height in the posterior maxilla.

Acquired melanocytic nevi grow and persist in a stable form into adulthood. Using genome-wide methylation profiling, we evaluated 32 histopathologically and dermoscopically characterized nevi to identify the key epigenetic regulatory mechanisms involved in nevogenesis. Benign (69% globular and 31% nonspecific dermoscopic pattern) and dysplastic (95% reticular/nonspecific dermoscopic pattern) nevi were dissimilar, with only two shared differentially methylated loci.

What is the relationship between mortality and satellite images as elucidated through the use of Convolutional Neural Networks? Following a century of increase, life expectancy in the United States has stagnated and begun to decline in recent decades. Using satellite images and street view images, prior work has demonstrated associations of the built environment with income, education, access to care, and health factors such as obesity. However, assessment of learned image feature relationships with variation in crude mortality rate across the United States has been lacking.

Inclusion of pesticide monitoring data in pesticide risk assessment is important yet challenging for several reasons, including infrequent or irregular data collection, disparate sources procedures and associated monitoring periods, and interpretation of the data itself in a policy context. These challenges alone, left unaddressed, will likely introduce unintentional and unforeseen risk assessment conclusions. While individual water quality monitoring programs report standard operating procedures and quality control practices for their own data, cross-checking data for duplicated data from one database to another does not routinely occur.

Acquired forms of nephrogenic diabetes insipidus (NDI) include lithium (Li)-induced and hypokalemia-induced NDI. Both forms are associated with AQP2 downregulation and collecting duct (CD) cellular remodeling. Statins are cholesterol-lowering drugs appearing to increase AQP2 membrane-translocation and improve urine concentration in other NDI models.

Large-scale electronic health record (EHR) suites have the potential to cover a broad range of use needs across various healthcare domains. However, a challenge that must be solved is the distributed governance structure of public healthcare: Regional health authorities regulate hospitals, municipalities are responsible for first-line healthcare services, and general practitioners (GPs) have an independent entrepreneurial role. In such settings, EHR program owners cannot enforce municipalities and GPs to come on board.

The 2019-20 bushfire season in south-eastern Australia was one of the most severe in recorded history. Bushfire smoke-related air pollution reached hazardous levels in major metropolitan areas, including the Australian Capital Territory (ACT), for prolonged periods of time. Bushfire smoke directly challenges human health through effects on respiratory and cardiac function, but can also indirectly affect health, wellbeing and quality of life.

Aims/hypothesis: We aimed to assess whether general practices (GPs) using an electronic disease management program (DMP) with population overviews, including alerts when patients failed to receive guideline-recommended prescription medications, increased prescriptions of lipid-lowering drugs for patients with type 2 diabetes with no history of lipid-lowering treatment.

Methods: This observational study included 165 GPs that reached a high level of use of the DMP in 2012 and a control group of 135 GPs who reached a high level of use in 2013 and, hence, who were less exposed to the DMP throughout 2012. A binary measure for having been prescribed and filled lipid-lowering drugs at any time within a 12-month exposure period was derived for all patients with type 2 diabetes who did not receive a prescription for lipid-lowering drugs in the baseline year prior to the study period (i.
