This review provides an overview of existing data from the literature summarizing therapies for exercise-induced laryngeal obstruction (EILO) with 2 main areas of focus. We discuss the role of speech-language pathologists in the assessment and treatment of EILO and an overview of different respiratory retraining techniques used in the behavioral management of the disease. We then discuss the role and some of the technical specifics of supraglottoplasty (SGP) for refractory supraglottic EILO, including patient selection and similarities between SGPs performed for EILO and for infants with laryngomalacia.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFAminopeptidase A (APA) is a membrane-bound zinc metallopeptidase involved in the production of angiotensin III, one effector peptide of the brain renin-angiotensin system, making brain APA a relevant pharmacological target for the development of novel therapeutic treatments against hypertension and heart failure. The structure-based design of new APA inhibitors is described, based on previously developed thiol-containing inhibitors and APA crystal structure. Chemical synthesis, in vitro assessment against APA activity, pharmacological and pharmacokinetic profiling were performed, ultimately leading to a potent and selective APA inhibitor.

Purpose: The aim of this prospective cross-sectional cohort study was to test the effect of silicone hydrogel (SH) and rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lens (CL) wear on corneal sensitivity, applying the new Swiss Liquid Jet Aesthesiometer for Corneal Sensitivity (SLACS) and the Cochet-Bonnet (CB) aesthesiometer, based on subject feedback (psychophysical method).
Methods: Participants were recruited for three equally large groups: Group A (SH CL), Group B (RGP CL) and Group C (non-CL wearers). Inclusion criteria were healthy eyes and OSDI ≤ 13.
Age-related hearing loss is a highly prevalent condition, which manifests at both the auditory periphery and the brain. It leads to degraded auditory input, which needs to be repaired in order to achieve understanding of spoken language. It is still unclear how older adults with this condition draw on their neural resources to optimally process speech.

In decoding tasks, on the contrary, brain responses are used to predict the stimuli, and traditionally, the signals are assumed stationary within trials, which is rarely the case for natural stimuli. We hypothesize that a decoding model assuming each experimental trial as a realization of a random process more likely reflects the statistical properties of the undergoing process compared to the assumption of stationarity.

View Article and Find Full Text PDFA simple balancing method using passive samplers over a week's period has been developed and tested successfully to determine elimination rates of 22 common micropollutants of household and industrial sources in 18 full-scale wastewater treatment plants of different design and performance. Independent reactor tests to delineate elimination rates with native sludge of the treatment plants correlated very well with the full-scale elimination rate determinations. As opposed to common assumptions, this large dataset indicated that shorter sludge retention times - read: higher active biomass - showed higher micropollutant elimination rates in many cases.
