Anthelmintic discovery and development in the animal health industry.

Most modern anthelmintics used against human pathogens have come from the animal health (AH) industry. Historically, new molecules were discovered empirically, but recent developments in genomic and screening technologies have significantly enhanced the opportunities for target-based identification of novel therapies. However, drug discovery and development is still a complicated and costly process with high attrition.

The first Anglo-Swedish Medicinal Chemistry Symposium was held in Are Fjallby, Sweden. It was well attended, with the majority of participants being medicinal chemists from the pharmaceutical industry. The meeting covered a wide range of topics and concentrated on the discovery, optimization and pharmacological profile of novel drugs for the treatment of a variety of diseases, including stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer.
