Article Synopsis
  • Polygenic traits are influenced by multiple genes, environmental factors, and gene interactions, making their genetic inheritance complex compared to single-gene Mendelian traits.
  • Chickens were chosen as a model to investigate a major Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL) related to body weight using advanced genomic techniques, including genome-wide association studies (GWAS).
  • The research identified key genetic markers and interactions associated with body weight, revealing specific gene variants linked to growth traits, enhancing our understanding of polygenic traits in animals.

Growth is a complex and dynamic process that may be measured at a specific point or over a period of time. Compared was the growth of male and female chickens over a three-generation period. Involved were red junglefowl (RJF; Gallus gallus), a line of White Plymouth Rock chickens (LWS; Gallus gallus domesticus) selected for low body weight, and their reciprocal F and F crosses.
