Background: Chronic arsenic exposure has been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease; diabetes; cancers of the lung, pancreas and prostate; and all-cause mortality in American Indian communities in the Strong Heart Study.

Objective: The Strong Heart Water Study (SHWS) designed and evaluated a multilevel, community-led arsenic mitigation program to reduce arsenic exposure among private well users in partnership with Northern Great Plains American Indian Nations.

In the United States (US), private-supply tapwater (TW) is rarely monitored. This data gap undermines individual/community risk-management decision-making, leading to an increased probability of unrecognized contaminant exposures in rural and remote locations that rely on private wells. Objectives: The aim of this paper is to attribute Panton-Valentine leucocidin (PVL)-positive methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) to clonal lineages by molecular typing with special reference to isolates exhibiting spa type t008/multilocus sequence type (MLST) ST8 [widely disseminated in the USA as 'community-associated MRSA (caMRSA) USA300'].

Methods: PVL-positive MRSA (n = 117) were detected among 4815 MRSA sent to the German National Reference Laboratory for typing. These isolates were analysed by PFGE, spa typing, multilocus sequence typing, grouping of SCCmec elements and PCR detection of arcA, msr(A), mph(B) and the > or =6 AT repeat unit in the SACOL0058 sequence.

OBJECTIVE: to present data on prevalence and interregional spread of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in Germany. METHODS: A nationwide collection of MRSA isolates from nosocomial infections in 143 hospitals was established from isolates (n=4368) sent to a microbiological reference center during 1993--95. As chosen by distinguishable resistance phenotypes at each time of occurrence during the study period, 1830 isolates were subjected to molecular typing by means of Smal macrorestriction patterns, PCR for RNA gene spacer patterns, and PCR for patterns of DNA stretches flanked by the ERIC-2 sequence and flanked by Tn916 and ribosomal binding site.
