Impact of a (poly)phenol-rich extract from the brown algae Ascophyllum nodosum on DNA damage and antioxidant activity in an overweight or obese population: a randomized controlled trial.

Background: Epidemiologic evidence suggests that a diet rich in (poly)phenols has beneficial effects on many chronic diseases. Brown seaweed is a rich source of (poly)phenols.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the bioavailability and effect of a brown seaweed (Ascophyllum nodosum) (poly)phenol extract on DNA damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation in vivo.

Renal functional outcomes are not adversely affected by selective angioembolization following percutaneous nephrolithotomy.

Objective: Selective angioembolization (SAE) effectively diagnoses and treats iatrogenic vascular complications following percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL).

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 1329 consecutive PCNLs and identified patients who underwent SAE following PCNL with at least 12-month follow-up. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) was calculated for all patients preoperatively, postoperatively and at last follow-up.

Improving the Odds: Intercostal Metal Coils Mark Area to Resect in Rib Lesions.

Precise localization of a rib lesion for its resection remains a challenge because of multiple factors including nonpalpable pathology, unfavorable body habitus, inaccurate clinical examination, and unreliable rib count on physical examination, unfavorable lesion location within a rib (its posterior aspect), and resection of sclerotic lesions with grossly intact rib cortex. We describe a novel rib localization technique that eliminates potential mistakes and avoids resection of an inappropriate rib. Our method of rib localization includes placement of metallic coils by interventional radiologists under computed tomography guidance where two coils are deployed within the intercostal spaces, one superior and one inferior to the rib lesion.

Isolated adrenal cryptococcosis, diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration biopsy: a case report.

This report documents a case of isolated adrenal gland cryptococcosis without the often reported component of concomitant meningitis or Addison's disease in an immune competent patient. Furthermore, both the patient's lung cancer and adrenal infection with cryptococcus were incidentally discovered during work-up for syncope in the setting of hyponatremia. This case also underscores the diagnostic value of fine-needle aspiration biopsy in this unusual presentation.

Life-threatening postoperative hemorrhage from hepatic artery pseudoaneurysm successfully treated by transcatheter embolization in a 5-year-old.

Upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by a pseudoaneurysm after hepatobiliary operation is well described in adults. This can be successfully treated with transcatheter embolization under angiographic guidance. We report a case of massive upper gastrointestinal bleeding in a 5-year-old boy secondary to a pseudoaneurysm of the right hepatic artery after choledochal cyst excision.

Intra-arterial methylprednisolone infusion in treatment-resistant graft-versus-host disease.
