We investigate Self-Attention (SA) networks for directly learning visual representations for prosthetic vision. Specifically, we explore how the SA mechanism can be leveraged to produce task-specific scene representations for prosthetic vision, overcoming the need for explicit hand-selection of learnt features and post-processing. Further, we demonstrate how the mapping of importance to image regions can serve as an explainability tool to analyse the learnt vision processing behaviour, providing enhanced validation and interpretation capability than current learning-based methods for prosthetic vision.

Terrestrial toxicology data are limited for comprehensive ecotoxicological risk assessment of ecosystems contaminated by per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) partly because of their existence as mixtures in the environment. This complicates logistical dose-response modeling and establishment of a threshold value characterizing the chronic toxicity of PFAS to ecological receptors. We examined reproduction, growth, and survival endpoints using a combination of hypothesis testing and logistical dose-response modeling of northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) exposed to perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) alone and to PFHxA in a binary mixture with perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) via the drinking water.

To further characterize avian toxicity to environmental levels of select per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), we established species- and tissue-specific PFAS chronic toxicity values (CTVs) associated with a lowest-observable-adverse effect level (LOAEL) threshold previously established for northern bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) chronically orally exposed via drinking water to either perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) or a simple PFAS mixture. Aided by advances in analytical techniques, the novel avian oral PFAS CTVs reported in the present study are lower than the previously reported toxicity reference values (TRVs) estimated for birds chronically exposed via feed. Thus, current avian PFOS TRVs may not be fully protective of wild avian populations at PFAS-impacted sites.

Vibro-tactile feedback offers a complementary augmentation cue for motor guidance and training. Motivated by the needs of prosthetic vision rehabilitation, we explore the use of the cylindrical forearm surface to deliver arm guidance cues via vibro-tactile stimulation. We present 'VibroSleeve', a novel wearable arm motion guidance aid made up of 4x4 arrangement of vibration coin motors embedded within an elastic sleeve for delivering vibro-tactile patterns to the forearm.

Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) encompass a large, heterogenous group of chemicals of potential concern to human health and the environment. Based on information for a few relatively well-understood PFAS such as perfluorooctane sulfonate and perfluorooctanoate, there is ample basis to suspect that at least a subset can be considered persistent, bioaccumulative, and/or toxic. However, data suitable for determining risks in either prospective or retrospective assessments are lacking for the majority of PFAS.

Some PFAS have been shown to cause adverse health effects including decreased total cholesterol, birth weight, and reproductive success in laboratory animals; however, a lack of chronic toxicity data exists for PFAS in avian ecological receptors. Introduction: Orientation and mobility (O&M) specialists assess the functional vision and O&M skills of people with mobility problems, usually relating to low vision or blindness. There are numerous O&M assessment checklists but no measures that reduce qualitative assessment data to a single comparable score suitable for assessing any O&M client, of any age or ability, in any location. Functional measures are needed internationally to align O&M assessment practices, guide referrals, profile O&M clients, plan appropriate services and evaluate outcomes from O&M programmes (eg, long cane training), assistive technology (eg, hazard sensors) and medical interventions (eg, retinal implants).

Purpose: With a retinal prosthesis connected to a head-mounted camera, subjects can perform low vision tasks using a combination of electrode discrimination and head-directed localization. The objective of the present study was to investigate the contribution of retinotopic electrode discrimination (perception corresponding to the arrangement of the implanted electrodes with respect to their position beneath the retina) to visual performance for three recipients of a 24-channel suprachoroidal retinal implant. Proficiency in retinotopic discrimination may allow good performance with smaller head movements, and identification of this ability would be useful for targeted rehabilitation.

Objective: One strategy to improve the effectiveness of prosthetic vision devices is to process incoming images to ensure that key information can be perceived by the user. This paper presents the first comprehensive results of vision function testing for a suprachoroidal retinal prosthetic device utilizing of 20 stimulating electrodes. Further, we investigate whether using image filtering can improve results on a light localization task for implanted participants compared to minimal vision processing.
