Article Synopsis
  • The bamboo-coral Isidella elongata is crucial for deep Mediterranean ecosystems and is considered critically endangered due to the negative effects of bottom trawling.
  • A modeling approach was used to map the coral's habitat suitability and assess the impacts of climate change and fishing practices, predicting a significant loss of suitable habitats (60% by 2100).
  • The study identifies critical areas for conservation efforts in the Mediterranean, linking them to EU biodiversity strategies and emphasizing the need to protect vulnerable marine ecosystems from fishing activities.

Objectives: The gingiva heals at an accelerated rate with reduced scarring when compared to skin. Potential well-studied factors include immune cell number, angiogenesis disparities and fibroblast gene expression. Differential keratinocyte gene expression, however, remains relatively understudied.

The Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) is the piece of legislation with which the EU aims to achieve Good Environmental Status (GES) of its seas. This Directive requires Member States (MSs) to set up and implement Programmes of Measures (PoMs) to achieve this goal. This paper presents a catalogue as well as the analysis of the 535 measures proposed by the eight Mediterranean EU MSs to combat pollution and non-indigenous species and contribute to the GES of the Mediterranean Sea.

Introduction: In the UK, most people with lung cancer are diagnosed at a late stage when curative treatment is not possible. To aid earlier detection, the socio-demographic and early clinical features predictive of lung cancer need to be identified.

Methods: We studied 12,074 cases of lung cancer and 120,731 controls in a large general practice database.

Background: There is pressing need to diagnose lung cancer earlier in the United Kingdom (UK) and it is likely that research using computerised general practice records will help this process. Linkage of these records to area-level geo-demographic classifications may also facilitate case ascertainment for public health programmes, however, there have as yet been no extensive studies of data validity for such purposes.

Methods: To first address the need for validation, we assessed the completeness and representativeness of lung cancer data from The Health Improvement Network (THIN) national primary care database by comparing incidence and survival between 2000 and 2009 with the UK National Cancer Registry and the National Lung Cancer Audit Database.

Article Synopsis
  • The research investigates quorum sensing in cyanobacteria, particularly focusing on the production of N-octanoyl homoserine lactone (C8-AHL) in the cyanobacterium Gloeothece PCC6909 and its mutant PCC6909/1.
  • Using techniques like bioreporters and mass spectrometry, the study identifies C8-AHL accumulation, indicating a potential autoinduction phenomenon typical in AHL-based communication systems.
  • The study reveals that C8-AHL treatment alters the expression levels of 43 proteins in Gloeothece PCC6909/1, suggesting impacts on metabolic processes related to carbohydrates and amino acids, and points to the organism's role in biofilm formation.

Rationale: Previous studies have raised concern that women with asthma have increased risks of adverse obstetric and pediatric complications, but these have generally been underpowered.

Objectives: To quantify risks of major adverse pregnancy outcomes and obstetric complications in women with and without asthma.

Methods: We extracted information on 281,019 pregnancies from the Health Improvement Network database between 1988 and 2004.

The genome of several species has now been elucidated; these genomes indicate the proteomic potential of the cell. While identification of genomes has been, and continues to be, a technically and intellectually demanding process, the identification of the proteome contains inherently greater difficulties. The proteome of each living cell is dynamic, altering in response to the individual cell's metabolic state and reception of intracellular and extracellular signal molecules, and many of the proteins which are expressed will be post-translationally altered.

Design: Population based cohort study.

Setting: General practice research database.

There is accumulating evidence that the use of inhaled corticosteroids is associated with a dose-related reduction in bone mineral density. Whether this translates to an increase in fracture is unclear. We have used the General Practice Research Database to perform a case-control analysis, including 16,341 cases of hip fracture (mean age of 79 years, 79% female, median period prescribing data 2.
