Introduction: The angle of acetabular (cup) radiographic inclination is an important measurement in total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures. Abnormal radiographic inclination is associated with dislocation, edge loading and higher failure rates. Consistently achieving a satisfactory radiographic inclination remains a challenge.

Patients presenting for knee replacement on warfarin for medical reasons often require higher levels of anticoagulation peri-operatively than primary thromboprophylaxis and may require bridging therapy with heparin. We performed a retrospective case control study on 149 consecutive primary knee arthroplasty patients to investigate whether anti-coagulation affected short-term outcomes. Specific outcome measures indicated significant increases in prolonged wound drainage (26.

Most computational models of word segmentation are trained and tested on transcripts of speech, rather than the speech itself, and assume that speech is converted into a sequence of symbols prior to word segmentation. We present a way of representing speech corpora that avoids this assumption, and preserves acoustic variation present in speech. We use this new representation to re-evaluate a key computational model of word segmentation.

This paper presents the results from two experiments in which normal-hearing and hearing-impaired listeners used an adaptive procedure to select their preferred frequency response slope and two-channel compression ratios in twenty listening conditions. Whereas the preferred response slope mostly depended on the difference in SNR between frequency bands, the preferred output levels in two channels depended highly on the intensity level entering each band. In both cases, subjects preferred less gain in frequency bands where noise was more intrusive and they preferred less gain for listening comfort than for speech understanding.
