Paracetamol overdose is common and microRNA (miR)-122 expression is increased with liver injury. We aimed to measure miR-122 in the setting of an abbreviated paracetamol overdose treatment regimen. We compared miRNA expression in patients treated for paracetamol poisoning with an abbreviated 12-h intravenous acetylcysteine regimen (200 mg/kg over 4 h, 50 mg/kg over 8 h) or a 20-h regimen (200 mg/kg over 4 h, 100 mg/kg over 16 h) (NACSTOP trial).

Quantification of co-migrating paraproteins in the beta-region presents an ongoing challenge for laboratories performing serum protein electrophoresis. The between-laboratory variation may impact patient care if the patient uses different pathology services during plasma cell dyscrasia monitoring. To identify the practical difficulties and determine the extent of agreement in the reporting of beta-migrating paraproteins in Australia and New Zealand (NZ), sample exchanges were conducted in five Australian states and in NZ in early 2018.

Infusion of solid perfluoroalkanes into polydimethylsiloxane gels provides a simple route to regenerating deicing surfaces, with low adhesion strength from the lower inherent cohesive energy of the perfluoroalkanes. Further, these surfaces are more hydrophobic and environmentally stable than their alkane analogues. The result is a robust, regenerating surface which demonstrates low energy ice adhesion (19.

This work reports the novelty of using eco-friendly and cost-effective non-vacuum Electrostatic Spray-Assisted Vapour Deposited Cu(In,Ga)SSe (CIGS) thin films as photocathodes, combined with the earth abundant cobalt sulfide (Co-S) as a catalyst to accelerate the kinetics of photogenerated electron transfer and hydrogen generation for photoelectrochemical water splitting. CdS and ZnO layers were subsequently deposited on top of the selenised CIGS films to increase the charge separation and lower the charge recombination for the photocathodes. In order to improve the lifetime and scalability of the CIGS photocathode and the other cell components, a photoelectrochemical test was conducted in a neutral electrolyte of 0.

Current non-invasive prenatal screening is targeted toward the detection of chromosomal abnormalities in the fetus. However, screening for many dominant monogenic disorders associated with de novo mutations is not available, despite their relatively high incidence. Here we report on the development and validation of, and early clinical experience with, a new approach for non-invasive prenatal sequencing for a panel of causative genes for frequent dominant monogenic diseases.

Background: Ayahausca is an ethnobotanical drink of South America and the compound dimethyltryptamine (DMT) is primarily responsible for the hallucinogenic effects. DMT has a short half-life and its detection in urinary drug screens is challenging. We investigate a simple alternate approach to detect ayahuasca consumption by relying on other constituents of the drink, the β-carboline harmala alkaloids.

Targeting allosteric sites of the M muscarinic acetylcholine receptor (mAChR) is an enticing approach to overcome the lack of receptor subtype selectivity observed with orthosteric ligands. This is a promising strategy for obtaining novel therapeutics to treat cognitive deficits observed in Alzheimer's disease and schizophrenia, while reducing the peripheral side effects such as seen in the current treatment regimes, which are non-subtype selective. We previously described compound 2, the first positive allosteric modulator (PAM) of the M mAChR based on a 6-phenylpyrimidin-4-one scaffold, which has been further developed in this study.

The present work investigates the process of frosting formation on arched copper samples with different surface temperatures, calculated the thickness of the frost layer by using the scale method, and analyzed frost lodging, melting, and other phenomena that appeared during the frost-formation process. The results showed that the frosting process on an arched surface can be divided into ice-film formation, rapid growth of the frost layer, and stable growth of the frost layer. Meanwhile, the phenomena of frost-branch breakage, lodging, and melting were observed.

Context: To compare degree of liver injury and paracetamol metabolite concentrations after treatment with standard of care (20-h) vs. abbreviated (12-h) acetylcysteine regimens used in paracetamol overdose (NACSTOP trial).

Methods: Timed blood samples from a cohort of subjects enrolled in the cluster-controlled NACSTOP trial evaluating a 12-h acetylcysteine regimen (200 mg/kg over 4 h, 50 mg/kg over 8 h) were assayed for paracetamol metabolites as a pilot study, using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry.

Neurogenesis is the basis of stem cell tissue engineering and regenerative medicine for central nervous system (CNS) disorders. We have established differentiation protocols to direct human periodontal ligament-derived stem cells (PDLSCs) into neuronal lineage, and we recently isolated the neural crest subpopulation from PDLSCs, which are pluripotent in nature. Here, we report the neural differentiation potential of these periodontal ligament-derived neural crest stem cells (NCSCs) as well as its microRNA (miRNA) regulatory mechanism and function in NCSC neural differentiation.

Objective: This study provides an assessment of heat stress in indoor rice vermicelli manufacturing factories.

Methods: Worker interviews and heat stress assessments were conducted in food manufacturing factories in Singapore. The Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) and Heat Stress Index (HSI) were used as heat stress indicators.

Palaeoenvironmental records from the now-submerged Bering Land Bridge (BLB) covering the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) to the present are needed to document changing environments and connections with the dispersal of humans into North America. Moreover, terrestrially based records of environmental changes are needed in close proximity to the re-establishment of circulation between Pacific and Atlantic Oceans following the end of the last glaciation to test palaeo-climate models for the high latitudes. We present the first terrestrial temperature and hydrologic reconstructions from the LGM to the present from the BLB's south-central margin.

Background: Prompt intervention can prevent permanent adverse neurological effects caused by neonatal hypothyroidism. Thyroid function changes rapidly in the first few days of life but well-defined age-specific reference intervals (RIs) for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), free thyroxine (FT4) and free tri-iodothyronine (FT3) are not available to aid interpretation. We developed hour-based RIs using data mining.

Intussusception is a common cause of abdominal pain among the paediatric population with up to 10% of cases occurring secondary to a pathological lead point. Burkitt's lymphoma (BL) is a highly malignant and rapidly growing B-cell neoplasm which in extremely rare cases can present as intussusception. We report a case in an otherwise healthy 15-year-old male who presented with atypical abdominal pain.

Objectives: Canada has accepted more than 25,000 Syrian refugees fearing persecution in their homeland. Canadian guidelines recommend screening recent refugees from high incidence countries for tuberculosis (TB) and latent TB infection (LTBI). The prevalence of TB in this population is unknown.
