Immunotherapy has made recent improvements in disease-free survival (DFS) and/or overall survival (OS) in all stages of non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Here, we review the tumor microenvironment and its immunosuppressive effects and discuss how anti-angiogenic therapies may potentiate the anti-carcinogenic effects of immunotherapy. We also review all the past literature and discuss strategies of combining anti-angiogenic therapy and immunotherapy +/- chemotherapy and hypothesize how we can use this strategy for non-small-cell lung cancer in metastatic previously untreated/previously treated settings in previously treated EGFR-mutated NSCLC for the upfront treatment of brain metastases prior to radiation therapy and for the incorporation of this strategy into stage III unresectable disease.

CD38, a nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD) glycohydrolase, increases during infection or inflammation. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effects of a CD38 inhibitor (78c) on NAD levels, IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α cytokine expressions, and osteoclastogenesis. The results show that treatment with 78c on murine BMMs dose-dependently reduced CD38, reversed the decline of NAD, and inhibited IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α pro-inflammatory cytokine levels induced by oral pathogen () or () or by advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

Powassan virus (POWV) is an emerging tick-borne virus that causes severe meningoencephalitis in the United States, Canada, and Russia. Serology is generally the preferred diagnostic modality, but PCR on cerebrospinal fluid, blood, or urine has an important role, particularly in immunocompromised patients who are unable to mount a serologic response. Although the perceived poor sensitivity of PCR in the general population may be due to the biology of infection and health-seeking behavior (with short viremic periods that end before hospital presentation), limitations in assay design may also contribute.
