Introduction: The cut-off for referral to a higher center and further investigations for the delayed passage of first urine and meconium by a neonate have been traditionally kept after 48 hours of birth. There are very few studies regarding this in Indian neonates, and previous studies have relied primarily on the mother's recall of the event which may have led to recall bias. Therefore, through this study, we wanted to use hospital intake/output records to identify the risk factors that affect the timing of passage of first urine and stool in neonates delivered at our center and to find out if the cut-off of 48 hours to call it a delay is justifiable.

Article Synopsis
  • Neonatal jaundice affects a significant number of infants, leading to the need for treatments like phototherapy to prevent serious complications, particularly in preterm neonates.
  • A study explored the effectiveness of oral calcium phosphate as a supplement to phototherapy, finding that it significantly reduced the duration of phototherapy and improved the rate at which bilirubin levels dropped.
  • The intervention group receiving calcium phosphate had a lower incidence of rebound jaundice, although the finding wasn’t statistically significant, suggesting potential benefits for managing neonatal jaundice.

Background And Objective: Newborn screening (NBS) aims towards early detection of congenital disorders or prevention of intellectual and physical defects and life-threatening illness. Three disorders namely congenital hypothyroidism (CH), congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency (G-6-PDD) were selected for a preliminary study for NBS. The study aimed to establish NBS in the Indian scenario that could lay a framework for future such initiatives.

Railway infrastructure maintenance is critical for ensuring safe and efficient transportation networks. Railway track surface defects such as cracks, flakings, joints, spallings, shellings, squats, grooves pose substantial challenges to the integrity and longevity of the tracks. To address these challenges and facilitate further research, a novel dataset of railway track surface faults has been presented in this paper.

Defective wheels pose a significant challenge in railway transportation, impacting operational performance and safety. Excessive traction and braking forces give rise to deviations from the intended conical tread shape, resulting in amplified vibrations and noise. Moreover, these deviations contribute to the accelerated damage of track components.

Article Synopsis
  • * Results indicated a small reduction in oxygen saturation and a notable increase in heart rate after wearing the mask for six hours compared to three hours.
  • * Overall, wearing N95 masks continuously caused a mild increase in respiratory rate and significant variations in heart rate and oxygen levels over time.

A novel long period grating (LPG) inscribed balloon-shaped heterocore-structured plastic optical fibre (POF) sensor is described and experimentally demonstrated for real-time measurement of the ultra-low concentrations of ethanol in microalgal bioethanol production applications. The heterocore structure is established by coupling a 250 μm core diameter POF between two 1000 μm diameter POFs, thus representing a large core-small core-large core configuration. Before coupling as a heterocore structure, the sensing region or small core fibre (SCF; i.

Unlabelled: Electroencephalography (EEG) is a technique of Electrophysiology used in a wide variety of scientific studies and applications. Inadequately, many commercial devices that are available and used worldwide for EEG monitoring are expensive that costs up to thousands of dollars. Over the past few years, because of advancements in technology, different cost-effective EEG recording devices have been made.

Rotating machines as core component of an industry can effectively be monitored through vibration analysis. Considering the importance of vibration in industrial condition monitoring, this article reports and discusses triaxial vibration data for motor bearing faults detection and identification. The data is acquired using a MEMS based triaxial accelerometer and the National Instruments myRIO board.

Emphysematous gastritis is a rare and life-threatening condition caused by gastric inflammation and intramural gas formation, most often diagnosed through radiological evidence of a radiolucent shadow in the stomach wall in the clinical scenario of severe sickness. We report a case of emphysematous gastritis secondary to early-onset neonatal sepsis in a newborn which, to the best of our knowledge, has not otherwise been reported. Is it very rare or do we just miss it?

A range of optical fibre-based sensors for the measurement of ethanol, primarily in aqueous solution, have been developed and are reviewed here. The sensing approaches can be classified into four groups according to the measurement techniques used, namely absorption (or absorbance), external interferometric, internal fibre grating and plasmonic sensing. The sensors within these groupings can be compared in terms of their characteristic performance indicators, which include sensitivity, resolution and measurement range.

The development and evaluation of a controlled-release (CR) pharmaceutical solid dosage form comprising xanthan gum (XG), low molecular weight chitosan (LCS), and metoprolol succinate (MS) are reported. The research is, partly, based upon the utilization of computational tools: in this case, molecular dynamics simulations (MDs) and the response surface method (RSM) in order to underpin the design/prediction and to minimize the experimental work required to achieve the desired pharmaceutical outcomes. The capability of the system to control the release of MS was studied as a function of LCS (% w/w) and total polymer (LCS and xanthan gum (XG)) to drug ratio (P/D) at different tablet tensile strengths.

The objective of the research reported herein is to compare the compaction properties of three different chitin extracts from the organisms most used in the seafood industry; namely crabs, shrimps and squids. The foregoing is examined in relation to their polymorphic forms as well as compression and compaction behavior. Chitin extracted from crabs and shrimps exhibits the α-polymorphic form whilst chitin extracted from squid pins displays a β-polymorphic form.

Chitin has been investigated in the context of finding new excipients suitable for direct compression, when subjected to roller compaction. Ball milling was concurrently carried out to compare effects from different energy or stress-inducing techniques. Samples of chitin powders (raw, processed, dried and humidified) were compared for variations in morphology, X-ray diffraction patterns, densities, FT-IR, flowability, compressibility and compactibility.

Background: Indian data on potential hepatorenal toxic effects of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) in HIV/AIDS-affected persons is lacking.

Objectives: To assess hepatorenal abnormalities in HIV-infected persons on HAART in a hospital-based mixed cohort study using concurrent and nonconcurrent data analysis.

Methods: Hepatorenal function tests, urinalysis and ultrasonogaphy for liver/kidneys (when applicable) were assessed in 400 (men 185; women 215) persons aged 2-84 (mean 47.

In this study, novel 3D printed polymeric microneedle arrays were fabricated for enhanced cisplatin delivery to A-431 epidermoid skin tumours for cancer treatment. The microneedles were built by selectively photopolymerising consecutive layers of a biocompatible photopolymer resin using stereolithography (SLA), followed by coating of cisplatin formulations using inkjet dispensing on the needle surface. The printability via SLA was optimized to improve microneedle mechanical properties and optical coherence tomography analysis showed excellent piercing capacity of 3D printed microneedles to an 80% penetration depth.

The subject of our research is the optimization of direct compression (DC), controlled release drug matrices comprising chitosan/xanthan gum. The foregoing is considered from two main perspectives; the use of low molecular weight chitosan (LCS) with xanthan gum (XG) and the determination of important attributes for direct compression of the mixtures of the two polymers. Powder flow, deformation behaviour, and work of compression parameters were used to characterize powder and tableting properties.

Changes in tensile properties and the glass transition temperature (T) of plasticized polymer films are typically attributed to molecular mobility, often with no empirical data to support such an assertion. Herein solvent cast HPMC films containing varying amounts of PEG, as the plasticizer, were used to assess the dependence of tensile properties and the T on glassy state molecular mobility. Molecular mobility (molecular relaxation time and temperature) parameters were determined by Thermally Stimulated Current Spectroscopy (TSC).
