A "mutual update" training algorithm for fuzzy adaptive logic control/decision network (FALCON).

The conventional two-stage training algorithm of the fuzzy/neural architecture called FALCON may not provide accurate results for certain type of problems, due to the implicit assumption of independence that this training makes about parameters of the underlying fuzzy inference system. In this correspondence, a training scheme is proposed for this fuzzy/neural architecture, which is based on line search methods that have long been used in iterative optimization problems. This scheme involves synchronous update of the parameters of the architecture corresponding to input and output space partitions and rules defining the underlying mapping; the magnitude and direction of the update at each iteration is determined using the Armijo rule.

Effect of valproic acid on radiation-induced DNA damage in euchromatic and heterochromatic compartments.

The distinction between heterochromatin and euchromatin in the double-strand break (DSB) damage pathway is of interest, recent reports indicate that chromatin is not created equally nor is it acquiescent to DSBs. Using the classical histone deacetylase inhibitor, Trichostatin A, we have previously demonstrated that chromatin represents a heterogeneous substrate with respect to histone tail modification by histone deacetylase inhibitors and consequent responses to DNA damage and repair. Here, we extended the initial findings by investigating the radiation sensitizing properties of the widely used antiepileptic, valproic acid.

Mechanistic analysis of pH-dependent solubility and trans-membrane permeability of amphoteric compounds: application to sildenafil.

This study was aimed at investigating the pH-dependent solubility and in vitro transmucosal permeability of sildenafil, an amphoteric compound with limited aqueous solubility, across parallel artificial membrane. The aqueous solubility and permeability of sildenafil as a function of solution pH were theoretically derived from the individual contributions of all species (cationic, neutral and anionic). The stability, octanol-water distribution coefficient (log D), and solubility of sildenafil were then determined at various pHs, the permeability study was also performed at different pHs using parallel artificial membrane.

Endovascular management of an embedded intracranial knife.

Background: Endovascular therapy (ET) is infrequently used in the setting of acute penetrating intracranial trauma.

Methods: We report a case where ET was used immediately prior to and following removal of an embedded intracranial knife, which was found to be disrupting the anterior cerebral artery.

Results: The proximal vessel was coiled and angiographically occluded and then the knife was removed with the microcatheter in place.

Curcumin effects on blood lipid profile in a 6-month human study.

Studies in animals and a short-term human study have suggested that curcumin, a polyphenolic compound concentrated in the curry spice turmeric, decreases serum cholesterol concentration. However, no controlled human trials have examined the effect of curcumin on cholesterol. This study investigated the effects of consuming curcumin on the serum lipid profile in men and women.

Evaluation of partial carbon dioxide rebreathing cardiac output measurement during thoracic surgery.

Objective: Noninvasive partial CO2 rebreathing (NICO; Novametrix Medical Systems, Inc, Wallingford, CT) is a relatively new alternative to thermodilution (TDCO) for measurement of cardiac output. This study compares the 2 methods during thoracic surgery and one-lung ventilation.

Design: A prospective, observational study.

A 7-year experience with balloon-mounted coronary stents for the treatment of symptomatic vertebrobasilar intracranial atheromatous disease.

Objective: Balloon-mounted coronary stents (BMCS) have been adapted for use in the intracranial circulation for the treatment of symptomatic intracranial atheromatous disease (ICAD). We performed a retrospective analysis of our 7-year experience with these devices in an attempt to quantify the periprocedural risks and long-term outcomes in patients with symptomatic ICAD of the vertebrobasilar (VB) system treated with BMCS.

Methods: A retrospective review of a prospectively maintained database was performed to determine the neurological and non-neurological periprocedural risks of BMCS treatment of ICAD.

Immune surveillance as a rationale for immunotherapy?

The majority of pathogen vaccines are used within the prophylactic setting as opposed to the therapeutic setting proposed for cancer vaccines. Due to the intricate role of the immune system in tumorigenesis, tumor immunotherapy may have to borrow approaches from autoimmunity. The size of the malignant population that has to be eliminated, the associated immunosuppressive effects of the tumor, the diversion of inflammatory and immune processes by the organized stroma surrounding the tumor, the antigenic diversity of the tumor cell population leading to immune escape, all present barriers that predestine the failure of most attempts for active immunotherapy.

Processing of fresh palm fruits using microwaves.

Microwave heating was determined in this study to be suitable for the detachment and drying of palm fruits from whole bunches, cut bunches and spikelets. Microwave treatment of the palm fruits was able to attain the objectives of conventional fresh palm fruits sterilization processeses such as fruit softening, nut conditioning and halting of enzymatic lipolysis. Palm oil and kernel oil solvent extracted respectively from the microwave treated whole fruits and kernel were found to have a good quality of low free fatty acid content.

Progressive dehydration causes a progressive decline in basketball skill performance.

Purpose: To determine the effect of 1, 2, 3, and 4% dehydration (DEH) versus euhydration (EUH) on basketball performance in adult male players.

Methods: Seventeen 17- to 28-yr-old male basketball players completed 3 h of interval treadmill walking (40 degrees C and 20% relative humidity) with or without fluid replacement. Subjects completed six trials in random order: 1) EUH with a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (CES), 2) EUH control (flavored water with 0% carbohydrate and 18 mM sodium), 3) 1% DEH, 4) 2% DEH, 5) 3% DEH, and 6) 4% DEH.

Risk for infection with highly pathogenic influenza A virus (H5N1) in chickens, Hong Kong, 2002.

We used epidemiologic evaluation, molecular epidemiology, and a case-control study to identify possible risk factors for the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza A virus (subtype H5N1) in chicken farms during the first quarter of 2002 in Hong Kong. Farm profiles, including stock sources, farm management, and biosecurity measures, were collected from 16 case and 46 control chicken farms by using a pretested questionnaire and personal interviews. The risk for influenza A (H5N1) infection was assessed by using adjusted odds ratios based on multivariate logistic regression analysis.

Defining carbohydrate antigens as HIV vaccine candidates.

The induction of high affinity antibodies capable of broad neutralization and protection against infection and/or disease is a major goal in the development of a vaccine for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). Insights into the structure and function of the envelope (Env) protein of HIV-1 suggest that the virus is under strong selection pressure by the immune response leading to constant mutations in the Env protein including the N-glycosylation sites. Initially considered a shield against the immune system, the heavily glycosylated outer surface of the HIV Env protein has drawn attention lately as a legitimate target.

Anesthesia considerations for robotic-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy: a review of 1,500 cases.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in American men and new surgical techniques have led to less invasive options for prostate surgery. Innovations in robotic technology have enabled robotic systems to become a more common sight in operating theatres throughout the United States. Approximately 1,500 consecutive patients scheduled for elective robotic prostatectomy (RP) were reviewed.

Microvessel density and clinicopathologic characteristics in hepatocellular carcinoma with and without cirrhosis.

Angiogenesis is essential to the survival, growth, invasion, and metastasis of various human solid tumors. We compared the microvessel density (MVD) and clinicopathologic features of two different groups of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), namely HCC with cirrhosis (HCC-C) and without cirrhosis (HCC-NC). A tissue microarray composed of 20 normal livers, 20 cirrhotic livers, tumor and adjacent background non-neoplastic liver tissues from 20 HCC-C and 20 HCC-NC were constructed and stained immunohistochemically with antibodies against the antigen CD34.

Continuing nursing education via the internet: An evaluation.

The aim of this study was to describe registered nurses' experiences and evaluate their satisfaction with web-based continuing nursing education. A convenient sample of 64 nurses participated in this study. They were given access right to logon a WebCT courseware entitled Nursing Care of Mechanically Ventilated Patients developed by the author.

Experience sharing on the implementation of telehealth system in Hong Kong.

With the growth of the ageing population in Hong Kong, healthcare professionals believe that there will be a great demand of healthcare service at the community level. In 2000, the first prototype of telehealth system was developed, tested and validated by the School of Nursing, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. With the advancement of information technology and inexpensive video- conference facility, an inter-clinic patient-centered healthcare information system has been evolved and used by a number of satellite clinics since 2003.

Evaluation of HO-1-u-1 cell line as an in vitro model for sublingual drug delivery involving passive diffusion--Initial validation studies.

The aim of this study was to provide preliminary validation of a new sublingual mucosal cell line (HO-1-u-1) for use as in vitro sublingual drug delivery screening of compounds involving passive diffusion. HO-1-u-1 cells were seeded on cell culture inserts. The ultrastructure and integrity of cell layers, inter-passage variation and directionality of drug transport, and apparent permeability coefficient (P(app)) of eight beta-blockers (representing compounds involving passive diffusion) were determined.

Purification of polyglutamine proteins.

The misfolding and formation of fibrillar-like aggregates by polyglutamine proteins is believed to be a key factor in the development of the neurodegenerative polyglutamine diseases; however, relatively little is known about structural and conformational aspects of polyglutamine-induced misfolding and aggregation. This is largely attributable to the fact that polyglutamine proteins have proved difficult to purify in quantities suitable for biochemical and biophysical analyses, thus limiting the extent to which the proteins can be conformationally characterized. Recent advances, however, have seen the development of a number of protocols enabling the expression and purification of these proteins in more significant quantities.

H2-M3-restricted T cells participate in the priming of antigen-specific CD4+ T cells.

H2-M3-restricted CD8+ T cells provide early protection against bacterial infections. In this study, we demonstrate that activated H2-M3-restricted T cells provide early signals for efficient CD4+ T cell priming. C57BL/6 mice immunized with dendritic cells coated with the MHC class II-restricted listeriolysin O peptide LLO(190-201) (LLO) generated CD4+ T cells capable of responding to Listeria monocytogenes (LM) infection.

Intestinal absorption of hawthorn flavonoids--in vitro, in situ and in vivo correlations.

Our previous studies identified hyperoside (HP), isoquercitrin (IQ) and epicatechin (EC) to be the major active flavonoid components of the hawthorn phenolic extract from hawthorn fruits demonstrating inhibitory effect on in vitro Cu(+2)-mediated low density lipoproteins oxidation. Among these three hawthorn flavonoids, EC was the only one detectable in plasma after the oral administration of hawthorn phenolic extract to rats. The present study aims to investigate the intestinal absorption mechanisms of these three hawthorn flavonoids by in vitro Caco-2 monolayer model, rat in situ intestinal perfusion model and in vivo pharmacokinetics studies in rats.

Two percent dehydration impairs and six percent carbohydrate drink improves boys basketball skills.

Purpose: To determine the effects of exercise heat-induced two percent dehydration (DEH) and euhydration (EUH) with a six percent carbohydrate-electrolyte solution (CES) compared with placebo EUH (P EUH) on basketball skills in skilled young players.

Methods: Fifteen 12- to 15-yr-old boys underwent three separate 2-h exercise heat exposures (double blind, random order): 2% DEH by limiting fluid intake during exercise in the heat and basketball skill drills, EUH (no net weight change) with a 6% CES, and EUH with a flavored water placebo (P EUH). After recovery, subjects performed an orchestrated sequence of continuous basketball drills designed to simulate a game (12-min quarters + a 10-min halftime).
